Its so hit or miss that there is honestly no right or wrong answer. I have always hand written page long letters and have received successes others haven't and failed where others rake in.
Its all about feeling it out and developing your own system.

The only important things about your letters:
Legible (whether it's written or typed, really does not matter)
Sincere
Include the please and thank you.
Don't use a form letter.

The older players likely enjoy reading a LOR that maybe a page long but the current players likely only read the first line of your request. With the younger players, that first line may determine whether they sign your item or "pitch it" with the other hundreds they receive.

I keep mine short and to the point. Usually introduce myself, make a couple brief comments about the players career and then nicely ask if they could autograph my items. I thank them in the last line and sign it.
