It will say on the back of the Upper Deck card usually what the patch is from:
* Event-Worn or Event-used
* Photo shoot or rookie photo shoot (worn)
* used in an official NHL game
On the back of some Panini it says "game-worn material guaranteed by Panini"
I looked through various sets and they are all generally "photo shoot" material:
* The Cup (RC auto patches + any other jersey/patch pieces from other subsets)
* SPA Limited FW auto patches
* Ultimate Collection
* UD Ice PETG auto patches #/10
* SPx
* OPC Premier
* BAP
* Hot Prospects
* UD Rookie Materials/Threads
* SPGU Inked Sweaters (rookies only)
* OPC Materials
The only one I found for RC memorabilia from Upper Deck (out of my stuff) that says it was used in an official NHL game was my 2009-10 SPGU SIGnificant Numbers Yannick Weber. I don't think there are any RC patches.

So really, we should all be chasing the 2nd year cards of players. Like this years Taylor Hall Rookie Review in the (not yet released) 11/12 SP Authentic auto patch?

One of the Blues rookies from last year, Ian Cole I think it was, tweeted a picture of himself signing his Cup RC's. They were the complete card, at least for him.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Yeah, sorta, kinda?
If you want a RC... obviously last year was the year to do it. If you want a Auto / Patch / Rookie of him, obviously that means last year was the year to do it.
If you want something that actually contains real game used material? You're right. This is the year to buy it.

It is always suprising how much of a drop off there is between the true rookie and the 2nd year game used stuff.
