Eberle is one that I'm eyeing too.

Not sure that I can come up with an answer for you, but I'll tell you where I'm at in "what one to go for" and where my dilemma is.

I'm an Oilers fan. Typically I try and go after the "best" rookie card of all their new players. This is first year guys that are coming up with the Oilers (so this season it includes the likes of Lander, RNH, etc) as well as vets that they've added (like Barker, Potter, Eager, etc).

Last year was the first time in many many years that the Oilers actually had star power from their rookies. While I had no trouble paying to Cup ARP for guys like Dubnyk, O'Marra, or Colin MacDonald the year before - Eberle, Hall, and MPS are all way out of my price range.

On top of the fact that they're new Oilers, they're also new stars in the league (jury still out on MPS, I know) so this made me want to collect a few more RCs of each new guy than I normally would. Three guys all coming into the leauge at the same, with this much hype, will likely be the first & last time it happens in Edmonton.

    Here is what I targeted:

    - Young Guns of all three (building the set anyway)
    - SPA FW Auto of all three (beauty cards, class 'standard' mid-end RC, first hard signed RCs)
    - Certifed RCs of all three. Not just the firt GU / Auto'd RCs of these guys, but were actually the first in-pack RCs you could pull. Maybe even the first all together (though I think Artifacts, and the redemptions were available first).
    - Finally "one other" RC of each of the three. For MPS - I just got a Crown Royal Sillouette for a price I liked. The other two? Still waiting.

For the reason above, I much prefered the Certified over the SPx, and you're getting (basically) the same card. Sticker Auto, Photoshoot Jersey, and fairly limited (less than 500 copies).

I'm still looking for the "other two". The two sets that I've been interested in are mostly Ultimate & SP Game Used. With the SPGU you get a very limited card (/99) but it isn't Auto'd or have any jersey in it. With the Ultimate you get a hard signed auto, limited to 99..... I think the last Eberle went on eBay for about $150. Still more than I'm looking to pay though.... but maybe that's in your price range?

Personally, I think the best value out there is Dominion. For $300-$400 you could have one tomorrow. WAY out of my price range (by the sounds of things, yours too) but it's basically the same card as The Cup: ARP /99 from an Ultra-Premium release. Cup is selling for $700+ so you're basically getting the Dominion for half.

Not sure that I really answered your question (okay, I would go with Certified) but hopefully that stirred up a couple of ideas for you anyway.

The hard signed FW auto is the way too go. It's a good price now and the kid is playing unbelievably. I wouldn't waste my time with a SPX RC i'd get the FW.

For me it it's not considered a rookie card
    It's a sticker auto

    But thats only me

Not a true rookie because it has a sticker .....

IMO, SPA is one of the best auto rookie sets, with one of the nicest designs year after year.
