The second mixed martial arts product from Dallas-based trading card company Leaf may be its last, and according to company president Brian Gray, he'll know sooner or later whether his company can continue to compete in the thin, and very fickle, MMA sports card market.
"Leaf MMA Metal is a test for me," Gray told CombatCardboard.com recently. "Collectors are going to have to vote with their wallets. If they support Leaf Metal, then there will probably continue to be competition in this market. If they don't support Leaf Metal, there will be no competition because I can't keep making MMA. It's a business, and I can't lose money on a product."
Gray said he's done his homework, and realized the mixed martial arts sports card trading market has been "very shaky" lately.
"I've looked at the MMA market over the last six months, and thought, 'boy, these products are struggling. My main concern is for the Leaf brand," continued Gray. "If I put out a product like the last MMA that ends up plummeting .... I cannot have that. I care too much about the Leaf brand to have an item that comes out a loser."
Gray thinks his answer lies with the Leaf Metal MMA product, which he says, has been revised a half-dozen times since the initial announcement of the product more than a year ago. Each box of Leaf MMA Metal will contain eight cards, all autographed directly on the card, secured in top loaders. There will be no base cards or relic cards. Just eight autographed cards printed with Leaf's Metal technology. Parallel versions of the cards will be randomly inserted, as well as the popular National Pride autographed subset.
No international cases will be produced; however, production numbers will be extremely limited with this product. Gray said just 150 total cases will be printed.

the mma cards are struggling to sell because they are releasing set after set way too fast and charging ridiculous prices for them.
