When did PMG become popular...
In 99-2000 Metal Basketball didn't even have PMGs anymore...so obviously it was not that popular when it first came out....a Jordan probably went for $50 or so...

Age, imo helps a lot
Age adds to scarcity, which leads to $, which leads to popularity. Our need-it-now, microwave mentality then attempts to recreate it to make a quick buck.

Precious metal gems craze was popular for the first couple of years upon release during the period 1997 - 2000, from that period on-wards game-used and autographs took off leaving the gems craze behind.
The Jordan PMG insert you mentioned was the first real high-end Jordan card i begged my mum to buy for me back in 1998. It costed $700, still have the card somewhere in my house lol.

Precisely. I remember everyone wanting the PMGs on rec.collecting.sport.basketball (Usenet trading group) back between 1997-1998. From 1999 onwards, the demand decreased because autos and GUs really started to become "the thing" instead.
