Make it Nine? Report Says Canada Could Support 2 More NHL Teams
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=387334
TORONTO -- A new report released by the Conference Board of Canada says the country could support up to nine NHL teams.
Quebec City and Hamilton are the most suitable cities for the league to look at for expansion, according to the report.
The Conference Board of Canada used four "pillars" in its analysis -- population size, market wealth, corporate presence and the level playing field created by a Canadian dollar that is at par with its U.S. counterpart.
It found that "getting and keeping" a second team in Toronto would be difficult.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Quebec City and Hamilton.
I always wished that Halifax was the size of Wpg, purely from an NHL Franchise standpoint.
I love it at it's size now, but it will never get NHL Hockey, which is very unfortunate.
I also believe that the study is wrong in the sense that Toronto could not support 2 teams. Who the Hell lives in Hamilton anymore?Last edited by centrehice; 02-09-2012 at 03:41 PM.

Canada definitely could support 2 more NHL teams. The economy of Canada is one of the best in the world and cities like Quebec and Hamilton could definitely support them.

I agree completely. Toronto, IMO, would be a MUCH better place to go than Hamilton. The only thing that Hamilton has going for it, that the rest of Southern Ontario does not, is they've got a building that has enough seats that they could play a game there tomorrow.
I would go to Toronto, Kitchener (or Waterloo, Cambridge), Guelph, Woodstock, and London before I would go to Hamilton.
I would suggest the overall article is probably wrong though. You could get 3 more in Canada. QC, Toronto #2, and then another city (like a Kitchener).
Halifax would be a good spot, but the size (as you alluded to) isn't there.
I'd rather leave them where they are, and get NEW teams in Canada. A 32 team league would be better for scheduling / playoff seeding..... and instead of paying pennies on the dollar, new owners would have to come up with serious cash - and inflate the value of everyone's team. Expansion would be a much bigger win for current owners than relocation would be.

I'm starting to sort of come around on another team on southern Ontario, but 2 more? No way. I'd much rather see more American expansion than (TO x 2) +1. Seattle or Portland, maybe a team back in Hartford. Could Wisconsin support an NHL franchise, or would adding a team to the Brewers and Packers be too much based on population?
