    Fake autograph question

I have a hypothetical question. First of all I would like to think that most of the people on here are legit and trustworthy. However I know that there are a few bad apples. My question is if someone sells or trades an autograph that they said they got IP/TTM and it turns out to be a fake later on what happens next. For example say there is a ballplayer that everyone gets back ttm. Collector A trades a ttm auto of the ballplayer to Collector B for some other items. 6 months down the road Collector B decides to sell the auto and sends it in to PSADNA who tells them that the auto is a fake as a $3 bill. Does anyone worry about this when trading for autos? Also what recourse does anyone have if they find out later on down the road that their auto is fake? Again this is just hypothetical and I am intersted in know has this ever happened to anyone on here. Thanks.

If it is a TTM auto, it's a risk that we all take. I don't think anyone is trying to deceive, there is just no proof that the auto is real or not. Also, PSA or any of the others are not the authority, just because they say something is real or not is not the authority figure. Neither are all the 'experts' on these forums, who seem to always know when something is real or fake, mostly fake. If the auto is IP, then you would have a more reasonable expectation that the auto is real, but again, there is no proof that it isn't, regardless of a third party.

    Just my opinion.

This brings me to my next question. What percentage of ttm autos do ya'll think are fake?

My wife picks with me and says all ttms are fake because what ball player has the time to sit around and read a bunch of fan mail and send off autographs. She says that people don't even want to read their bills let alone fan mail. I told her that she was wrong and estimated that about 75% of all ttm autos are legit.

Wow...I could rant for hours and make videos on this, but here is what I say:

First off, do NOT trade certified card autos for TTM autos. I collect both, but I have had people offer me a TTM auto for a Certifed Card Auto. thats a NO

Second, if TWO TTMers do a trade, they both should run the risk through there mind that it may be fake. I mean, I have seen people trading the Peyton Mannings like crazy, but they may be fake. You never know with TTM, thats why people send to the smaller guys, cause the bigger guys are MUCH harder to get.

Lastly, I would not say all TTMs are fake. I have had friends and other people saying 75% of TTMs are FAKE, but that is NOT TRUE. I would say 75% is true, like mrveggieman said. I mean, if you send to all big guys like Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Bosh, Nash, Dirk, etc., yes 75% are fake or pre print. But if you are like an average TTMer and send to alot of smaller guys, 75-85% are real.

Regarding this situation: If I was the guy who traded, and 6 months later it comes back fake with PSA (alright, lets use Dirk N. as an example) I would be mad, but I knew that we both traded autos, and my end could be fake.

This is the risk we take with TTMing, but its a fun hobby. I'm glad I found out about it, collecting autos my whole life, only TTM since June 2010. And I love it

    2 points-

without intending to, I've developed a reputation as the "it's fake" guy. After talking to some dealers I am certain that a good % are fake, but not 75%. I'd say at worst it's 50/50, and I'd say it's 65/35 Real/Fake. It obviously changes, as the last poster said, if you send to all stars or a lot of "rank and file" guys.

The other point, I traded a Durant to someone on here that I got in person, watched him sign and vouch for with my word of honor, and he sent it in for certification, and it failed. He told me what happened but said that he believed that I would not deceive him. I guess it comes down to faith in the person, and I hope that my rep on here is good.

If I did not have a good rep, and he demanded a trade back, I'm pretty sure it would have been all on me whether or not to grant it, but I think I would have. But I don't think there is recourse per se.

Another issue is a lot of these TTM and especially IP autos are rushed big time and don't pass PSA/JSA/DNA (whatever.)

Actually just sent in a Vick IP auto, I have a feeling its gonna be a fail although I personally handed him the item and watched him sign it...

I usually just stick to not trading TTMs/IPs for that reason. Only ever made one trade for an IP auto.

I would have to say a lot of my TTM returns are genuine. I get a lot of extra letters or notes from certain players. It's a great addition to the TTM autograph they sent. Some of them are really good guys, down to earth and happy they are remembered.

I only traded one of my non certified autos and that was because the guy that I was trading with requested it. It would be nice to know that all of my ttm autos are legit but there is no way of being 100% sure. Also @ ajscards101 were you using Dirk as an example or is there some reason to believe this his ttm autos are not legit?
