No MVP?!
Not the biggest Mike and Mike fan, but I listen to them as an Ohioan living in Tampa, Florida who doesn't want to hear the local guys talk about how the Rays need a new stadium and the Bucs should have never fired Gruden.
Anyway, Mike and Mike were mentioning how today is the 50th anniversary of Wilt scoring 100. As I'm sure a lot of you know Wilt averaged over 50 that year. That was also the same year that Oscar Robertson averaged the triple double. The thing that really amazed me (and Mike and Mike too) was that neither of these guy won the MVP. That honor went to Bill Russell, his 2nd of 3 in a row, and 5 total.
I know you can't put everything on stats, and I wasn't alive to know how things worked back then, but that seems absolutely crazy to me. The #s are listed below, so let me know what you think. And if you were alive during that era or have a better understanding of the times, I would be curious to know how this happened. Was it simple a "best player from the best team" thing that we have seen even recently in the NBA?
Wilt: 50.4 PPG; 25.7 RPG
Oscar: 30.8 PPG; 12.5 RPG; 11.4 APG
Russell: 18.9 PPG; 23.6 RPG; 4.5 APG

was pretty sure they did, but went ahead and checked anyway. They won a 7 game series over the Lakers. Link below to a season recap. Pretty interesting. Wilt also played in all but 8 possible minutes of the entire season!

I love the all around game it took for Oscar to average that Triple Double, but I would have had to cast my vote for Wilt. 50 and 25? Ludicrous!
