Hello From WI-Lost in a huge Collection
Hello, Thank you for this Forum.
I have been given a collection that came from a previous card store owner in (IL) I think. Until now I have never even owned a Baseball card. Now, I am currently trying to sift through a trailer load. I have played around on the Beckett site and stuck a few cards in the organizer there (same user name) but I am at a complete loss as to how to organize this collection. My goal is to get the cards stored safely & maintain a database with current pricing.
There is everything from packs wax and other, boxes with cards in order, not in order, some in plastic envelopes, plastic cases, signed, error cards, sets, baseball, football, basketball and even soccer! I even found a Whitney Houston card-go figure. Topps, Score, Upperdeck, Proset, Every brand.
I am not very far into the trailer but have not found anything pre 1968, So I am not thinking I have a gold mine, but my daughter and I are having great fun and would like to preserve this collection correctly.
I am wondering first, HOW once you have the cards entered into a data base do you store them in an order where you could find a certain card later? Does anyone have advice? And second, When entering into a data base, is there anyway to enter a set, and then all the cards contained in that set will automatically show up in inventory-if not I am looking at years of data entry.
Forgive me if these questions are dumb, but I am at a total loss here :)
Thank you in advance.
Laura

Welcome to SCF! I use the SCF Inventory to log everything. I also have everything sorted by year and set.
Andrew Bailey Supercollector: 233/263 not including 1/1's (88.6%); 265/466 cards including 1/1's(56.9%)

Welcome to SCF!
Your best bet would be to pick up some monster boxes, and begin the tedious task of organizing them by set/year or by team. Just depends on how you're figuring on getting rid of them. Those would be right around the best ways of organizing in a hope to find them later, lol.
