Rumor Roundup: Radulov's Return?
BY: Lyle Richardson
Speculation has been growing since late last week of the Nashville Predators’ talented “prodigal son” returning to their lineup.
Right winger Alexander Radulov, who last suited up with the Predators in the 2008 playoffs, is rumored to be considering a return to the Predators before season's end.

Apparently a decision will be made in the next two days according to his agent. He will be a nice addition to our 3rd line, just hope he doesn't screw up the chemistry.

I'd bring him back to serve hotdogs in the stands in Nashville. Maybe get him to pick up a fiddle once in awhile and join in on the in between period honkeytonks.

you gonna be lucky to have a player like him back in your team...
He is better than Andrei Kostitsyn ! He deserve better than comments like yours. Yes, he leaved the team in 2008 buy he had his reasons. I really think he leaved the NHL and America before the town of Nashville and his fans. He never says something bad about fans in Nashville or his teammates. He gonna have a huge impact on your team. If you can understand that, you dont deserve to see him play in your arena. He will sign with a other team next summer...
Im gonna go with a looonnggg shot ! He will sign with Phoenix (Quebec City) for next season ... :)

Didn't mean to offend you. He is my favorite Preds player and I still collect his cards. I should have explained myself a little more. When he comes back he should be on the 3rd line for a few games until he gets acclimated. Before the playoffs started he should be on the top line with Fisher and Erat.

He won't be signing anywhere else, he'll be an RFA.
No team is going to risk a compensation package on a player who might decide a second time to ignore his contractual obligations.
If Nashville is smart, they won't either.
Personally I don't think he should be allowed back mid season like this. If all he wanted was to finish out his contract he could have done it in any of the past three seasons. Instead he gets to cherry-pick for a season where Nashville has a legitimate shot in the west? Screw that, put him through waivers and let him go rot on Long Island with Nabokov. If he wants to come back to the Predators he should have to do it at the beginning of the season, so he has to play out his full contract, not just the last 2 weeks of it.

x2,and many of the GM'S are thinking the same, because if he does it,many other players may do the same, put him through waivers!

I doubt many other GMs are thinking the same thing.
I spent a few minutes reading a couple different articles, and I can't really provide specifics, but it seems as though this has been done about a dozen times before (though Alexi Semenov was the only other player to return to the NHL, with the NHL & PA both granting an exception to the waiver rule).
Waiver Rule 13.23 (the one in question.... the one that allowed the Islanders to grab Nabakov from the Red Wings) was never intended to apply to a player in Radulov's situation (though that is mainly becuase, I suspect, the NHL never intended a player to be in Radulov's situation).
The whole point of the rule to stop GMs from pulling a move that Glen Sather was fond of using the late 80s / early 90s. Look up Reijo Ruotsalainen. Basically he was a great QB for the powerplay... and they wanted him for the playoffs.
He joined them in March of 1987 (after his season ended) and was there in time for the playoffs, and to win a Cup. He did the same thing again in 1990. Two Stanley Cups with a grand total of 26 NHL regular season games for the Oilers.
The rule was created so that teams couldn't sign European players late in the season. I would suspect that the motivation was that teams didn't like seeing the strong get stronger (it should be assumed that players doing this are not likely to sign with 12th place teams..... or even 8th place. They're looking to come back only to play for a contender). The PA also had the interest of their members to protect: Importing a player from Europe after the season begins means that a player from the active roster (who has been playing dues) gets bumped.
Radulov is the exception to the rule. I agree with the sentiment here.... without knowing him...... he comes across as a spoiled brat, who decided to take his ball and go home.
He *IS* still under contract to the Predators though, and that's the big difference between him and Nabakov. He may appear to be selfish, and I think this likely is a case of him cherry picking the best time to return:
His season has ended in Russia, he's coming back to a Preds team that is poised to do well in the playoffs - and if he plays well, he will be able to parlay that into a big money contract next year.
What else is the league and PA supposed to do here? If you listen to league, or team, officials talk: They never recognized the contract in Russia. He was on the suspended list, and now they will lift the suspension.
I suspect that if the Blackhawks wanted Cristobal Huet back they'd be granted a similar exception.... so long as the remainder of his salary wouldn't give them cap problems.

The Preds claim that they still hold his contract, and that "it's like having a player come back from injury."
Except the CBA has specific guidelines for things like injuries and how players can and must be treated with regards to it. This situation is very, very different.
I think this will set a very bad precedence. What's to stop anyone from doing this intentionally? Don't like the team you're on, go get some KHL money and come back when they're doing better ! Need to circumvent the cap until the playoffs hit and the cap goes away? Have him "go awol" to the KHL !
Sorry. If he wants to come back, he should have to do it at the beginning of the season and honor his FULL contract, not just the last two weeks of the season. What's the point of having a suspension list if the suspension has absolutely no impact on anything?
