i do sometimes get jealous when i see a nice vanek card, but i always keep in mind that i am a broke college student, and that my gf doesn't care that i collect, so someday I can afford some serious The Cup cards lol

also, i usually look at those posts as box breaks...kinda just to see what people get. I don't see them for the cards so much as for something to replace box breaking til i get out of school (which is in a week thank god lol)
Please check my inventory before my photobucket!!! It's more up to date!!!

You have to treat cards like a commodity, eggs, butter, widgets. One day you will be an old man like me, and the cards will mean nothing.

Sorry to give you the rude, correct answer, but sooner or later, they are just cardboard.

Bahahahaaaaa!!! I'm 43 and I work 60-70 hours a week, I feel as old as Yoda some days..........

My son is addicted to video games, he has no patience for a hobby that doesn't involve explosions or car chases. My daughter is all about facebook, clothes and boys. Hockey cards are lost on them. I plan on being buried with a Howie Morenz and a Ken Dryden, the rest will all be inventoried so that my gf can sell them off after I've shuffled off...........

I know they're cardboard and I know they're ultimately worthless. I know I have a limited budget and limited space. But I just can't help it, I want I want I want!!! I think ultimately the answer is narrowing down the PC, I just have no idea how to get there :D

I think the big thing is being patient, I collect Ovechkin and try to not focus on cards under /25 or auto's, as they just add up to quick and he seems to have one in every set. I haven't bought any Ovechkin singles from before Pinnacle came out, so at the expo this weekend, I get to go hunting for everything from Pinnacle to now. Keep in mind that when cards first come out, it usually takes till the next product comes out for the prices to come down. It's amazing how much prices go down, really I find it comes down to being smart with your money. Whether I get a card in the first week it's out or 6 months later, I still enjoy it as much and it's a lot cheaper. just my thoughts

A lot of the cards in the S&T threads are very cool but only a very small percentage of them are cards that I would want for my own collection. Bruins stuff? Looks neat but I'd have to start a bonfire if it was around too long. Some of my fellow Habs fans have some amazing stuff, and every so often I do get a little jelly about the cards they have that I do not...but I'm sure the roles are reversed from time to time when I post up my latest maildays. You can't have it all, and the sooner you train yourself to let go of all that you fear to lose, the better off you'll be. That's Jedi wisdom right there.

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

    Amen.

I think more so than getting jealous at the S&T threads, I get jealous about the stuff that dealers have on Ebay. Sure the S&T threads are nice, but a good 95% just doesn't fit into my collection. However, when I search Ebay and see a card I like, only to find out it is in a dealer's store with a ridiculous BIN, then I get mad.

I can't say that i get jealous because i'm aware that everyone has different financial circumstances. I myself am a college student and can't really purchase as much as i'd like. Furthermore, as you have come to say, the answer winds up being your PC focus. A wide compass yeilds a variety of cards, but maybe not as high end as you'd like (i.e the cup).

For example, when i began collecting again in July of last year, as a redwings fan i said to myself, "Oh i'll just get an auto of every player on the current roster". However as time went by, i found out that my true passion is for rookie year auto's of certain players that i grew up gravitating to (i.e Zetterberg/Datsyuk/Kovalchuk). So as of September of last year i have strictly narrowed my pc to rookie year auto's, henceforth my money is now focused entirely on what i like and it also allows me to pick up higher end cards that i could not afford had i not narrowed my pc. Im still trying to sell off some of the cards i purchased prior to the narrowing of my pc.

Another great point mentioned above is that of patience. And in short, this hobby will teach you that very well.

Draft style group breaks can bring great results too. Never get into a Team Style though....99% of the time you will lose your shirt!!!

It's natural to get jealous sometimes... I do!

It's tough to not be able to buy PC-cards sometimes when I don't have
any cash remaining in my bank account/paypal and must let the card slip away from me...meanwhile to be aware of there are some which got almost unlimited $$$ and never need to worry about to miss all opportunity to buy card/cards (or something)....

It's because of that I decided to quit collecting Cam Ward & Henrik Lindqvist (and others) to not miss such many cards of Tom Barrasso or Johan Hedberg like before.... of I would love to have more $$$ but I don't....

But I'm very happy about my collection (even if i missed many 1/1 and low- prints) even if I don't have a good salary.....

Phildo with what seems to be every 90's insert ever produced

    Ha ha... thanks.

Please keep in mind that, when it comes to cards. The ONLY ones I buy are 90's, YG and SP FW... and I don't break wax.

I spend a lot on cards, and have gotten lucky with some contacts that have helped me nail some tough stuff.. but I don't dabble in vintage, and I don't chase new stuff. 90's is my sweet spot, and that's where I live..
