I've tweeted players before asking if guys would sign before games...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Tweeting asking for autographs, I've seen, doesn't usually work because a lot of athletes give away signed stuff for contest prizes.

Yep. I've asked athletes if they would sign if I mailed a card to them and that works. Also, a lot of athletes like lambeau mentioned give stuff away. Even the better players. I know Verlander has given away quite a few signed memorabila pieces.

There are so many threads on this...I'm quite avid on Twitter, both of the above methods work (not always) also I've won a couple of contests and have gotten an autographed Michael Jenkins football and a Chuck Knoblauch autographed photo. Ralphie May gave away autos through twitter at one point, but he moved the requests to strictly email, now.

It's possible with luck, a good eye and many times knowledge (most contests are trivia questions). I know Knoblauch gives away 10 autos for every 1,000 new followers he gets and he follows back.
