Brainstorming
First of all, I just want to say that I'm in awe of all the great artists here on this board. I'm truly impressed.
I need some inspiration from you all. If all you had was a "head shot" of a player, how (in your opinion) would you design a card? I know that I'm asking a lot, I'm just drawing a blank. For the sake of designing, all the players are baseball players, and I'm just out of ideas.
If you can help me out..........thanks.

simple, really fast and effective
I did a design that is really simple, fast and effective to work with.
I'm a Habs collector and on their web site you can find the head shot of the 800 players that passed by Montreal. With this design I can do 20 - 30 players in an hour or less.

I go this route when all I can find for an image is a close up:

To piggy back off RF33, here's an example of mine.

I like the top one a little better. By making the picture area smaller, it allows me to use headshots that are a little smaller in size, plus gives more room for the signature.
