IMO inserts are a current fad that will fade away. A couple years ago most of these inserts just sat around in boxes collecting dust and could be had for practically nothing. Autos all the way.

Inserts! Jordan signs so many things! Its not rare at all! I would much rather have a low #'d insert from when he played! Oh boy I get a crappy upperdeck jordan auto card!

I personally prefer to collect cards from the period when the player was active in the NBA. So my preference would be a rare, high quality insert from his playin days in a Bulls uni. That being said if I had the option to get an on-card auto that met those same criteria I go that route over a rare insert.
