Set Builders + Habs Fans = Crazy Prices

So there was a fellow in Quebec who had a whole bunch of the McDonald's Gold parallels from the recent Canadiens set. I really wanted to get the Gorges for my master set but was outbid in the final minutes. It's not often I lose on a Gorges card, but c'est la vie. What blew me away though was seeing some of the prices for some of the other players out there. Let's take a look....

    Petteri Nokelainen - $50 shipped - http://www.ebay.com/itm/11-12-UD-McD...-/140758038975
Far and away the highest-selling card of this player. You can get his Cup RC for less than $10!!!

    Mathieu Darche - $59 shipped - http://www.ebay.com/itm/11-12-UD-McD...-/140758054180
Again, what other card of Mathieu Darche would possibly approach $60?

    Yannick Weber - $92 shipped - http://www.ebay.com/itm/11-12-UD-McD...-/140758020290
There's a few printing plates that went for $45, and his complete UD Black nameplate went for less than $50. Crazy.

Now for the really fun two....

    Josh Gorges - $85 shipped - http://www.ebay.com/itm/11-12-UD-McD...-/140758027807
I really wanted to get this one as you know. I was prepared to go up to $75 for it, and even that's high. I've got pretty much every major acquisition imprinted in my brain for Gorges and there's maybe 5 cards I've paid more than this amount for, and they're the major rookie-year issues. I was pretty heartbroken to lose it, but hey that's life.

And get a load of this one....

    The Goalie - $275 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/11-12-UD-McD...-/140758042574
You read that correctly. Nearly $300 for a McDonald's parallel. You all know how much I like this player, but wow man that's a lot of coin. Just as a reference point, there's only 4 single cards on eBay that have sold on eBay for higher than that in recent weeks. And they're filthy patch cards (including that really sweet Dominion Laundry Tag with the perfectly framed Centennial logo that a member here pulled) or super-rare graded rookie-year issues.

The moral of the story: never underestimate what Habs fans who are building a Habs-related set are capable of doing. :)

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Second moral of the story: Cards don't need to be Auto / Rookie / Patch / 99 to be valuable :)

True that my friend. I was surprised to see how much higher Josh went than a few people. I'm sure I played my own part in that but for him to top Cole and Pacioretty was a bit surprising. Maybe the other dudes already had those guys. LOL
