    Wax Hoarding

Does anyone else do this? I'm bad for buying wax and then leaving it unopened. I probably have around 30-40 unopened boxes of various stuff in my card room at home. I mostly collect low to mid-range stuff so it's not like I have unopened The Cup or Ultimate sitting aorund. I think I'll eventually open it all.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster (with a few exceptions).

Old Wax (vintage stuff) can hold it's value because of the potential for big name rookie cards (depending on the year obviously)

New wax will most likely lose it's value because of the sheer volume of rookies in it whom are scrubs, plus alot of the mid range rookies will lose popularity and value. For example, each year that passes, Tyler Myers' Rookie cards all lose value.

Combine that with the potential for expired redemptions and I wouldn't chance it.

I mean, 2005-06 Series 1 will obviously gain value because of the potential for a Crosby RC, but SPA and any other set with rookie or auto redemptions will most likely lose value.

    Just my opinion.

I would hate to pull a redemption for a 2005-06 SPA Limited Rookie Patch auto of Crosby, only to see that it is expired.

Most of what I'm holding doesn't have redemptions in them ie. Score, OPC, UDS1 and S2, so that's not really an issue and I'm not holding them in hopes that they gain in value so I can sell them later. I'm actually not sure why I do it.

I wonder what'll happen when you get sick of all the unopened boxes and crack everything. I'm curious to see what hidden gems you have.

It can be the sign of a problem. Hoarding begins with the urge for the need, then the reinforcement of purchase.

It continues to manifest itself with non-use and the increased importance of the purchase over time. The convincing of one's self that they could never use the item or let it go because of it's value is simply a smokescreen to continue the behaviour.

If you are doing this with other items aside from collectibles, then you may have a problem.

Nope I have the same problem, I'll upload a picture of my collection right away! I enjoy it but I only store a case of each years high end hockey products. I have 1 case of both Ultimate Collection and The Cup stored away from each year for the past 5 years.

I just about pulled the trigger on a case of 05/06 The Cup a couple months ago but just couldn't do it (still kicking myself for that one because they are becoming more valuable as each month passes.

Expired redemptions will not cause higher end products to lose value, economics is the true decider of value with The Cup and Ultimate Collection.

It depends on why you hoard them.

I have about 20 sealed wax boxes from the 90's. I really enjoy the graphics on the boxes as they take me back to my childhood. When I have a child, I hope to open some of the boxes with them. I have only been collecting these sealed boxes for about 2 years and usually add about 10 boxes a year. Most of them are picked up at card shows so I don't have to pay the shipping.

The big reason I try to pick up 90's boxes is that I don't see some of these boxes very often and I know one day all the sealed product will be gone or too expensive (for the more rare products).

    I don't think I have a problem!

You have a problem my friend.

Your self control is so high that you should look into your family tree and see if there is some Vulcan in there somewhere.

I couldn't do that at all, far too weak.
