advice about a card shop - DON'T
End of story. If you already have overhead at your current location, just throw a glass case in somewhere with cards...if not open an "on-line" store through eBay or whatever, the overhead at a shop will kill you.

Your situation sounds perfect to give it a try. Just don't sink a lot of money into it. Like a previous poster said, get a few boxes of product and try a few singles of the local players. Then, and it may take a little while, you will get a better idea of whether or not there is enough of a market for you to be successful with cards.
Go in with realistic expectations. I will say this. I've owned and operated a full time card shop since 1992, and it's not nearly as enjoyable as it used to be. Much more stress, much smaller market.

There is a store in the Denver area that sells packs and boxes. They have almost no single cards. They can be found on the net but I don't have the link handy. Their name is Jerry's Sports Cards. Here is their catch: Spend $20 and get a name in the drawing. Wed. night drawing: Winner must be present to win grand prize. Display case with up to 10 full boxes of cards. No winner add one box per week. Runner up free box of cards, 2nd runner up $25 gift cert. for store purchases. It is a small store but standing room only on Wed. night with 50+ people. Start small, but figure something out to get 'em in weekly. Start with a $10 gift cert. and work your way up.
Too much work in single cards. If you want to make a living, sell packs and boxes.
Good luck!

I agree, my Uncle and dad used to run a card shop for a while and the biggest chunk of their sales came from selling packs. If you are willing to invest the money in packs by getting a license to sell em Id try it out.
Ask for suggestions too from the customers that come in. Most people wouldnt mind giving a pointer or two and it will let you know what to bring in if anything at all.
I am also good friends with a card owner. He says the cards are nice but most of the time its trade trade trade and very few sales.. It more a less comes as the eye catchers.
