    Scary Trend on Internet

Hey everyone. In addition to cards, I love to collect antiques and vintage items. Recently, I have been seeing sports cards from various years selling for large sums on sites such as Kijiji. We're talking about a B+ player's Pro-Set or O-Pee-Chee card selling for big bucks. Here's an example:

Has anyone else encountered these types of ads online? I'm unsure if it's ignorance on the part of the seller, or an attempted scam.

I have seen such things with sealed boxes of 1991 product for $100+, or like you pointed out, individual cards for outrageous amounts. Luckily, the people looking for cards and doing the buying are generally people like us, the ones who know, whereas the sellers either do not know or intentionally scam. The overly expensive common stuff hardly ever sells, some listing have been repeatedly placed on and off the web for years.

Sometimes the opposite occurs. A seller on Kijiji put up one of those 1911-12 tobacco cards in good shape, BV $1000 for $150. Did not have the money at the time, but that was a good deal.

If they do, then I wouldn't feel particularly bad for them. Buyer beware. Besides, if you have $900 to spend on one card without so much as checking it in a price guide, you have more money than brains anyways.

I agree with this and it isn't just on these type of sites as on ebay people do the same thing all the time.

It's just the same as always - someone goes through their old stuff, finds an old card and assumes it's worth hundreds of dollars. I see people on CraigsList all the time looking for $100 per 800ct box of base from 1985 - 1990.

I somehow doubt anyone is dumb enough to pay $900 for something without checking its worth first. Seeing as the seller is apparently in a need of money quickly I bet he/she just listed random stuff at outrageous prices in hopes of someone biting.
