Montreal Canadiens 2012 Draft Picks Review: Grade A

There was much anticipation before Marc Bergevin’s first NHL Entry Draft. Montreal’s new general manager and fans were eager to see what the team would do this weekend. Trevor Timmins’ scouting staff evidently did their homework as the Canadiens made several great selections, including Alex Galchenyuk, who, unless he turns into the second coming of Terry Ryan, will be a talented NHL player for years to come.

Sebastian Colberg is reported to be a great selection also. Here in Quebec a lot of fans are upset about the draft of Andrei Kostitsyn over the likes of Richards and Kopitar, but trevor Timmins staying with Montreal after all the changes is a big relief for those who are inside the game here.

Not a bad crop of players. Considering how deep the 2003 draft was, I think they could have easily gotten the center they needed then. In the first round, the following centers were available after 10th pick:
    11 Jeff Carter
17 Zach Parise (although more of a winger and the son of J.P. Parise)
    19 Ryan Getzlaf
    23 Ryan Kesler
    24 Mike Richards

I hope that the scout that helped make that choice was let go in the purge a couple years ago.

P.S.: Oddly enough (or coincidence), I swear the Habs are still trying to draft Belarusian players (or of descent).
