Oh for sure, he should know some English, he has been playing in the NHL for years. So he may not be well at it, but he should know something. Just try to keep what you say simple, just in case he doesn't understand. Even if he doesn't I find guys who don't speak English well, will still just nod in acknowledgement.

I know when we had a Russian player over here. I collect autographs so I did a search for a translator, and had it translate over "Could you please sign my cards" into Russian and then I printed it on an index card. I never ended up getting that player as he always used a different exit from where I waited after games.
Just keep it simple, maybe you'll be surprised that he does speak English fairly well. You can't imagine he would refuse to speak it, because you can't get by like that in an English speaking country.

My main suggestion is to not be like a screaming teenager when they see their favroite pop band

What I like to do to strike conversation is bring up something along the lines of a big play they made way back when, or when they reached a milestone. It also wouldn't hurt to mention that you have a massive colection of his cards as well. Maybe try explaining how you became a fan.
Stay cool and whatever you do, don't yell "OMG! OMG! OMG!"

My first thing i told myself was not to do such. Ive met Bobby Nystrom, Rey Mysterio, Ben Kowalewicz, and for all, managed not to do that, so....this is the ultimate test, so to say, heh heh. Anyway, my dad made me bring my Rookies/Base/Inserts binder, so, we have that. Also have my Jersey from the Pens and a sharpie... probably will bring up the time he scored a goal in double overtime...
