Confused - Need HELP
hey guys, i just got back into collecting cards about a month ago. I decided to collect PSA graded rookie cards of all my favorite players I grew up watching, and then some I never really got to see... basically just gonna collect studs.
Iv already gotten a few cards on ebay to start my collection. I have made a list of all the cards I want Pre 1990 in NFL.
but here is where Im confused. In the early 90s card collecting got crazy and decided to put out 385782375 rookie cards per player. Which to me ruins it... I like saying "i have Jerry Rice's Rookie Card" but now you cant do that... anyway, thats a whole new subject...
so i sat down trying to make a list of the current guys like LT, Vick, Manning, etc and there is absoultly no way Id ever be able to get all of their rookie cards... there are too many and too expensive. So I thought Id just get their "best rookie card"
my question is this: why is a 2001 Vick SP PSA 9 worth like $1100?? Are there only like 10 in existance or something? I dont get it... I can get a 1958 Jim Brown PSA 9 for $1200. and that card is FIFTY YEARS OLD
im really not trying to hate here, i just need some explanation. Id like to continue collecting rookie cards of players POST 1990, but i just dont know how too.. Im bidding on a 1990 Emmitt Smith Score Supplemental card that I expect to go over $300 (its PSA 10)... I just dont understand why the rookie card for the games all time leading rusher is like $1500 less than say Vick who has done nothing of any value in his career except some ewws and ahhhs...

not sure here. Personally, I think these grading companies ruined the art/hobby of collecting rookie cards. I`ve seen some PSA 6 cards going for far more than a raw card that is in much better condition.

Not to split hairs here, but a PSA 9 Jim Brown RC would run you about $4500-6500. PSA 8's are $1200. Also, 01 SP Authentic Vicks aren't gradeable because they are too thick, but they do book $1600 raw. His Spx has 2 different versions, both numbered to 250. It books $400 but a PSA 9 can regularly be had for <$325. For Tomlinson you'll probably want his Contenders rc. His SP Authentic and SPx aren't autographed..spx has a jsy and SPA has a patch.
With modern stuff, you're probably in the same boat as most other people. You'll probably just have to find a card that you like the look of that fits in your budget. If you can deal with that, you'll have a lot less aggravation I think. Trying to get a copy of every rookie card, as you've found out, is quite an undertaking in itself!
Now, if you need some rookies of guys pre-1990, I have a ton PSA graded already. Most are PSA 5-PSA 9, depending on the year/brand.
Best of luck in your collecting ventures.
