personally, I just use my own judgment. I don't plan on selling anything I get, and so far I haven't traded anything (not sure I want to do that either), so I usually just scan for authenticated cards made by card companies and use my own judgment, and either way I save it. There are only a few that I really am not too sure about in my collection

there's no reason to authenticate for a personal collection. Literally none. Even if you acquire a piece from an auction or via trade and you are unsure if it is authentic- those outlets won't give you a definitive answer so even then they aren't worth it.
The only time to use those things is if you are selling, and then only if the item/player is a very good one.

Yeah if its stuff you plan on keeping dont bother. If its something you want to/may want to sell- PSA or JSA is the way to go. Not endorsing their work or anything but if you can provide a COA from those guys your values go up on the secondary market.
If you're looking for some legit stuff and are wondering where to turn I would suggest Steiner or the Bob Feller Museum website. I was in Copperstown just a little while ago for HOF weekend. JSA had a booth in from of the MAB signing. They would authenticate any item signed by somebody appearing at the MAB show for $8. MAB took your ticket once you got your sig, and you had to go in a hotel, get the sig, and exit through the back. If you wanted the JSA you were supposed to get a slip inside but nobody bothered. All weekend I watched people stroll up and get COAs with nothing showing they had been inside. I could have easily scribbled Lou Brock on a ball and got a COA for $8. Crazy...
On the other hand I watched a rep from the Feller Museum sit with Bunning, Yount, Marichal, and Jenkins at different times and meticulously watch every item getting signed for their mail order and their in-house stocks. They really did a nice job. The next time a HOFer I need is doing a signing with the Feller people I wouldn't hesitate to send them something to get signed. It was crazy to watch Bunning bang out about 10 dozen ROMLBs though.
