What a great deal. Cap hit will be a mere $4.5M for the duration, which only kicks in for 2013-14. Forgot he still had one year remaining on current contract.

Good signing since the Habs rarely have more than one 30+ goal-scorer each season. Now if they can get Desharnais extended, but I think Subban's contract may conflict with this along with the current cap remaining for 2012-13. It definitely means that Gomez needs to be offloaded to another team.

Unless Gomez can be traded off, they also need to be worried about extending Desharnais as he is Max and Erik's linemate at center. I just looked on capgeek and they are a little too close to the cap at the moment depending on Subban's contract. Also the situation with the CBA adjusting the cap could put further confusion into play.

I cringe at all contracts (regardless of team) longer than three years...also, 4.5 mill per year because of one good year? YIKES...be afraid, Canadiens fans, be VERY afraid! My worry for Max is that he ends up being the second coming of Scott Gomez. A good player for a couple years, then disappears.
My hope is that lengthy, financially atrocious contracts are eliminated in this next CBA.

At the very least, the Habs are a little more conscious on how long their contracts are compared to a number of other teams in the NHL (like Philly) giving 10+ years in length with very regard.
4.5M is usually for an average of a 50-point season nowadays. You could say it does take some consideration of the possible lows. Patches is a completely different player than Gomez since he's a power forward and Gomez is normally at best averages 10-15 goals in a healthy season.
Then again, I could point out that contract that Grabovski recently got...

You can always tell when an NHL player is finished. NHLers when done, often play scared....... Gomez has played scared the past 3 seasons. Pacioretty does not have the look of a frightened Hockey Player.
The NHL has had several good players start out strong, then play scared before disappearing. Ales Hemsky and Mikael Samuelsson come to mind as such players, in Samuelsson's case, he's just a lazy dope, and in the past Jimmy Carson, Alexandre Daigle, Inga Hammerstrom, Bernie Nicholls.
When you play scared you do one of two things.....Stay away from all contact and just float, or become a stick-hack.
Max is neither of the two, nor do I think he will be.Last edited by centrehice; 08-21-2012 at 11:55 PM.
