    How Do You Organize

I have a collection that has gotten way out of control. On the order of 30-40 5000 ct boxes and unknown number so of RC's/Autos/GU'd/Inserts. The question I have is how do you guys with Mega Collections organize and store your cards? Alphabetically in binders or Top-loaders in boxes..etc...also what means do you use to kepp track of the cards you have? All input is appreciated..Thanks chuck

My base is all divided in each sport group I have roughly 50 5000 count boxes. All inserts are divided into groups as well. All GU and autos are in 2500 count boxes they are divided per team to make it quicker to find...

    Organize?

When I used to bust wax 3 times a week, I would take the inserts, autos/gu out of of the packs, and put the rest in a 5000ct box. Eventually I'd pull some of the stars and local cards out of them, then I'd sell the 5000ct box to a shop for $50-$100, and then sell them the "star" box. I also used those boxes to make grab bags for my table when I'd do shows.

It got way out of hand trying to actually manage 500,000+ cards. I don't know how you guys do it. I don't have the time...I'm impressed with myself that I can keep my registry as organized as I do. But that's about 200 graded cards, so it's a little easier. :)

Man, if my wife could only answer this question?? She hates my cards!!!! Of course when I made close to $1,000 selling random stuff a month ago she didn't complain!!!

I actually have a whole room dedicated to my sports stuff, (a loft above my living room) It's full of cards and other memorabilia. I have 4 huge shelves, which contain boxes upon boxes of cards. I probably have 6-7 folders full too. I have boxes of Inserts, boxes of just Rookies, boxes of #ed, GU'ed, and Auto's.
Usually when I rip boxes i take the goods out, and close the base stuff up, and put that box in another box. BASICALLY it's a giant mess right now, as I have been doing a major overhaul, and am thinking abouot selling most of my GU/autos in a giant lot on Ebay, just to clear up some space and get some X-tra cash!!
I have to clean it all up soon, because it's getting a bit out of control. But who ever has that kind of time right??

complete sets are in binders or boxes, mainly binders though. I have about a dozen 5,000 ct boxes divided up between QB`s, RB`s, WR`s, TE`s, K`s and then others. All in alphabetical order. Yes, I have no life. The players themselves are not in alphabetical order, but I do have it in order from A-Z in all positional categories. This way I find it easier to locate a certain player if need be. I also have about 200 smaller count boxes(100-800)just filled with mostly stars, partial sets, inserts, GU`d, auto, #`d, etc. Most of the "super" stars are being restocked as I`ve just recently sold a few lots here and there. It`s a bit much to keep track of stuff, although I pretty much know every card I have. Some have been forgotten about at times, but I`m pretty sure I know almost every card I have, or at least I know where to find a card if I need to if I still think I may have it.

Thanks for the feedback..I think I'm going to sort all base by last name and box them up and put them in the attic..as far as stars and inserts numbered less the 1000 I'll sort by last name and do 500 ct boxes for the big guys (Elway/Favre..etc..) I've got 37 4 inch binders full of RC and Stars and autos..that I'll need to sort by name..I just wish there was an easy database to mange all teh crap I've picked up since '96..thanks for the feedback and keep it coming..Chuck

I pondered this question quite a bit recently as I sold almost all my cards so I could start fresh. I figure I'm going to divide into sports and put all non inserts/GU/Auto in a big box(4 colums-5,000 ct?) and alphabetize by last name. I will keep a list on my computer and on paper to throw into the box so I know what cards are in what box. I will probably keep all my other cards mixed and not split up into sports but I will put them in alphabetical order. I plan on keeping a separate box for each of the three main Cleveland teams and alphabetizing those too. I am not sure yet if I will put my GU into order too or just keep them in a box. Also I plan on putting all the base/star cards in plastic as I go so I can keep up. I also will be continuing to keep my sets in binders. Now if I can only go put the remaining 100-200 cards I have into order so I can get out there and start collecting again.

I'm going through this stage myself. For now, I'm putting the rookies in binders, along with certain star base and inserts. For my game used and autos and numbered, I'll put those in a box by themselves, with rookies worth more than 20 bucks. For my other base and inserts i'll look into getting 5000 count boxes for those, and then the commons, i'll just throw in whatever box...speaking of rookies, if anyone wants 95 rookies..mainly steve mcnair, i got a bunch of them, let me know what you want. my 95 section of the binder is too big!
