Has it occurred to anyone here
That the Cup cards at $500+ for a pack of 5 is insane?
This is like a giant ponzi scheme that cannot end well.
Look at fringe players rookie cards from the 70s and 80s and they are worthless, yet some card with a picture of some guy that will have a 20 game career with "1 of 1" stamped on it sells for $100s of dollars?
O do not understand the percieved "rarity" when it is just arbitrarily created.
Seriously...

As long as there are people with the urge to stand above others and say "Hey, look at what I can afford that you can't", there will be The Cup, lol.

Sir, if I may, respectfully............they're ALL worthless. They're "worth" what we're willing to pay, and for now some of us are willing to pay a lot. It's all cyclical. Like technology :D

Is it really that much more absurd than breaking a box for $100.... when there is virtually no chance of hitting a card even worth half that?

My point is that none of it is really "worth" anything.

No that was MY point :p
I can't afford The Cup, so I don't even think about it. And I can't afford $100 on a box that will net me 3 or 4 PC cards out of however many packs, so I don't go for that either. I DID spend $35 (tax inc) on a box of Score back on Friday. Most of it was garbage, but I got a Gold Ovechkin and some other PC cards, and it took an hour plus to rip em all open, that was money well spent :)
Like just about everyone's said before, if you're in this for the hobby aspect, it's all good. If Nuge and Mario and Wayne and Maurice are just $$$ signs to you, then have fun riding the wave, sucka!!

Neither is a painting, or a first edition of a classic book. There is no intrinsic value in any of those as there would be with something like gold, yet they fetch high prices because of perceived value.
You can deconstruct the hobby in this manner, but it is futile.

I'm new to collecting but I was shocked at that too. I read pack of 5 cards and was trying to figure out how many packs there were and figured it was just one for Prime or Cup. They are really nice looking cards, thicker than normal and a great design but even if I was rich, I couldn't see myself buying a pack of those, maybe a few per yr for the base card for certain players.
However it is a good marketing ploy by the companies to have a set that's so high end that anyone who has $ to spend (or willing to) will feel the need to get something from it because it's "the best".

Yeah i was tempted for a tin perhaps this year but noway for that kind of price and its sick that the base cards are counted as one of the 5 cards lol... no thanks.

Value is given by the individuals purchasing it. Regardless of what object, what device... everything in the world is absolutely "worthless" until someone purchases it or puts a "value" on it.
Cards are no different. You are paying for either a piece of cardboard, scribbles, cloth, or all of the above. Essentially worthless.
You just have to understand your own risk and rewards as well as your own personal satisfaction of opening the product.
Some people enjoy opening the Cup for the "big" hit. That alone maybe worth the $500 to them.Last edited by Yipper; 09-12-2012 at 05:22 PM.
