How long til we see another 1,000 point d-man??
With Lidstrom gone. I was doing a search while looking at some cards. It looks like we won't be seeing another defenceman score 1,000 points in a season for a while unless they have a Gretzky-type year.

Only 3 I see hitting the number
Visnovsky, Phaneuf and Weber.... I see it not for another 7-8 years, but WOW what a run the D-men had, as we normally had 1 defenceman hit the 1,000 plateau each year for the past 10 years

It will be some time....
This is what Irks me about Hockey. Phil Housley was the first American Born player to get 1,000 Points, and yet he sits outside the Hall of Fame like a Homeless person.
Housley puts Gonchar to shame.

Well he's up there on games played along with many of them, 7 of the 30 have over a 1,000 GP which knocks them off instantly

i'd say Karlsson could do it if he continues producing. already has 149 points in 216 games and still only 22....but yea that won't be for awhile

Highly doubtful that Karlsson would pull that off as defensemen are more prone to offensive consistency. Also, by the time any blueliner even got close to 1000 points, they would likely have a silver stick (for 1000+ games) first before that comes close to happening. At an average a point per game (based on an 82-game schedule), it would take Karlsson the better part of next 11 seasons to have a chance of making that (and that's taking into consideration his 149 career points) and that he does not suffer any major injuries.
Most of the defensemen that have pulled off 1000 career points have played 20+ seasons in the NHL. All (except Lidstrom) of the 1000+ blueliners have played at some point during the run-and-gun time of the 80's. Considering the Art Ross winners of current rarely break 130 points a season (which has not happened since 95-96), the best offensive blueliner on average has half that tally each season.Last edited by xelloss1012; 09-14-2012 at 06:42 PM.

If Karlsson keeps up the pace he set last year, he'll have a shot. I just find it hard to believe that he'll be able to play near a PPG for 10+ years.
1000 point dmen is very unlikely these days. Scoring isn't high enough, defenseman typically don't play a "4th forward" model for more than a few shifts a game (rather than building a career off it.... like a Paul Coffey) and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of consistancy from that position, in terms of high scoring, year after year.
