An Opportunity to bring back the 90s? Insert Style!
I was thinking about this the quiet recently.
With the lockout upon us and the whole "what products to make" debate going on...
I was thinking UD should do something similar to the 11-12 Fleer Retro Basketball considering how successful that is.
We have so many products with patches, autos, and jerseys... why not something based more around set collectors and inserts (although we have OPC).
They brought back the old team logo insert in OPC and incorporated them into patches so why not bring back the old 90s inserts.
Same design, same aura as the famous 90s inserts
e.g.
Starquest Golds /100, Red, Blue, Green
NHL Trophies: Stanley Cup Hologram, Hart Trophy... etc.
As well as all the glove, the shinnies, the ssp...
All designed like the past incorporating both the old and modern players. A couple autos here and there.
Include a bunch of buybacks serial # them. As well as some buyback autos.
... etc.
Box prices like basketball roughly the $50-90? Same setup as basketball - 2 mini boxes in a box, 10 packs per box, insert per pack. A couple autos per box.
SP the old Starquest Golds, Stanley Cup Holograms ... etc, make them like a case hit or something like that.
SSP the rarer buybacks
I don't know about you guys, but I think the lockout is the perfect opportunity for sets like these. I'm sure a lot of collectors would hop on board. I know the whole 90s basketball inserts are popular, but in some light, hockey... although value is not as crazed, the 90s inserts were quite interesting to collect.
If this was even half as successful as basketball, I'm sure it would do even better than some of the current UD hockey products. Plus its just a lockout set making it even more "exclusive."

It's pretty much what they are going to be forced to do. It's going to be a long lockout.

UD only had a few successful products in 04-05. But for the most part, they used the same products as though they didn't have a lockout. Their incorporation during that time was quite ... meh....
If monkeys weren't running their business, they might actually do this...

I think this is where Panini could excel. They do inserts way better than UD and can stay true to the Crown Royale type theme. Other than Parkhurst and Artifacts, all UD products are heavily based on rookie content, whereas if you look at Panini, while they still have the same rookie aspects, they also do a better job of including legends. For example, Certified, although you have the Freshman Signatures and Rookie Jersey Autos (Fell 2 per case of 8) the rest of the hits were based off of current players or past. Same with Limited, even though there was a lot of rookie content, there was a lot of veteran content included. Crown Royale, outside of silhouettes, which they adapted for veterans, are also mainly focused on veteran players. Contenders is realistically the only all about rookie product from Panini. Sure other products had big rookie hits, but they weren't what you pulled 90% of the time. Look at Prime and Titanium. Titanium you could have some fun with creating parahell for modern day players by having their parallel #d to their jersey number as case hits. Some cool stuff they can do. UD on the other hand, you go through their products, Black Diamond, UD Series 1 and 2, SPx, SPA, The Cup, Ultimate, are all centred on the rookie content.
