An award-winning teacher has been barred from teaching after it emerged he both fondled and forced a student, 17, to pose for explicit photos inside a classroom cage used for storage.

Raemon Matthews, 57, a nationally regarded history teacher at Samuel Gompers High School in the Bronx, New York, has been barred from the classroom for sexual wrongdoing involving students.

An investigation by the New York City Department of Education found that Matthews intimidated a 17-year-old female student in 2008, engaging her in inappropriate activities including fondling her breasts and other private areas.

He also coerced her into posing for photos telling her it was to 'attract college recruiters and employers'.

He pleaded guilty to sexual abuse and was sentenced to one year of probation in June. He has worked for the school district since 2000.

A report from the special schools investigator reveals that the married teacher lured the student into closed-door photography and fondling sessions by telling her she was in danger of failing and needed extra help.

He would often offer students extra tutoring and stay late at the predominantly low-income, minority school.

According to the New York Daily News, the teenager tried to get him to stop after a year of the abuse and photo sessions but was told, 'no bo-boo, we're just getting started'.

She said she didn't want to push it in case he failed her.

An investigation wasn't launched until a cleaner found a CD of the girl in various stages of undress and reported him.
