David Stern sets date for retirement

    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/85...missioner-2014

For the last several years, with both words and actions, David Stern had laid the groundwork for his departure from the job he's both controlled and defined since 1984. He formalized it Thursday, announcing his intention to step down as the longest-tenured commissioner in professional sports.

During the NBA's Board of Governors meetings in midtown Manhattan, Stern advised the league's owners of his intention to retire on Feb. 1, 2014, the 30-year anniversary of his taking the job. In doing so, Stern, who turned 70 last month, stayed very much in the character he's developed during those three decades.

He made it clear he will remain in charge of league operations for the next 15 months, mentioning that arrangement several times, and making sure his hand-picked successor will be installed. The owners said they will begin negotiating with deputy commissioner Adam Silver to take over for Stern -- a decison they came to unanimously -- when that 15 months comes to an end. The plan is for Silver's appointment to be ratified at next April's Board of Governors meeting.

"It's been a great run. The league is in, I think, terrific condition," Stern said. "I'd like to think I did an adequate job. But one of the things I did best was provide a successor. I'm not going anyplace in the next 15 months, but this gives us the opportunity to have a very smooth transition."

Thank god, he is an awful commissioner. Let's hope the next guy isn't such a snake in the grass, I doubt it though.

Next guy has been following him around like a pet for the past few years so I wouldn't hold my breath. It is time for a change and I'm sure he could sense that....you know once you get past all the boos when your name is announced lol

It's funny how people rip on David stern but without him the league would not be where it is today. In the late 70's the finals games were not even live... Now the NBA is probably the second most well known league in the world behind the English premier for soccer..... Stern was always smart and used his stars to increase the popularity if the league.....people need to give the guy some credit...

Stern's reign started right around the same time MJ and other big name stars came into the league. Bird vs Magic was just getting started and the NBA imo was on its way. True or false? Could we agree that his job would have been much tougher without those guys? No one wants to dump his name in the trash lol but fans respond when they feel cheated no matter what sport. He made some great decisions but the controversies aren't going away. Especially when he avoids them to the point where he would strike back during in interview something like....."have you stopped beating your wife". That doesn't just go away because he made some great business moves.

The league had great players before he took over.....and the league will always have stars. The thing David Stern did differently is that he basically advertised these players better. He took the game from basically a second tier sport and now it is arguably as possible as baseball. I doubt basketball will ever catch football though. He has been the commissioner for almost thirty years it is inevitable problems will pop up. I think for the most part he handled the situations well. I think the guy should be given respect for expanding basketball to a global sport. I also think for the most part stern is an excellent interview and he answers questions any normal commissioner would... So I am not sure what you meant about the not beating your wife comment.

That "still beat your wife" comment came out of Stern's mouth when Rome asked about fan concerns following the latest draft. Yeah out of a commissioner's mouth on the air. Fair question given some recent #1s.

I won't get into the advertising. I honestly think that's where this league started to seem corrupt, but I digress. I do agree he helped the league but it was not going anywhere on Barkley's or Bird's smile. MJ launched this league. If you don't think so, just take away Kobe or Lebron today.....either one and see what happens.

I know there will be issues as commissioner that come up. The key though is being fair and transparent. Make decisions that won't distance your fans. Make decisions that don't favor certain players or teams. That's where he loses points.
