Back then, a lot of folks were really hopeful he'd be another Shaq. I remember the hype. Ming actually turned out better than I thought he would, but there was no way he could live up to the hype at his height.

Not really. He was the hottest thing in the NBA and being from the most populous country on Earth meant that he had a lot of overseas buyers. The NBA is more popular around the world as is basketball card collecting and the two worlds basically collided on Yao Ming.
