Hockey coach gets jail time for trip.

RICHMOND, British Columbia -- A Vancouver pee wee hockey coach has been sentenced to 15 days in jail for tripping a player during a postgame handshake.

Martin Tremblay swept out the leg of an opposing player while the teams were going through the typical hockey ritual of lining up to shake hands after the game. Two players, a 10-year-old and a 13-year-old, fell to the ice. The move was caught on video and worked its way around the Internet.

The 48-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of assault in November.

Some people take the game way too seriously and sometimes its the adults while the children enjoy playing the game and winning comes second. Here is an article I read yesterday about an adult who got upset with a 17 year-old referee.

Police have charged a man with assaulting a teenage hockey referee while several parents face discipline from a local association for their conduct following a game of 7- and 8-year-olds in Port Perry.

In another black eye for minor hockey, Durham Regional Police said Tuesday they arrested and charged Brad Fenney, 29, of Scugog with assault and uttering threats against the referee after a novice AE game involving the Port Perry Predators and Oshawa White on Feb.19.

Basically some parents confronted the referee after the game inside the arena and one adult went too far following the teen to his car and kicked in the legs from behind.

I had several police escorts after games when I was a minor hockey ref because of parents like this. The association I was in had one of the most notorious hockey dads in the province. No one could handle this guy, he was banner from several arenas around BC and when his kid got picked up by the local junior team, they told him if they heard one word from him, his kid was cut. This guy once left his kid at the arena after an AWAY game because he thought he didn't play well enough.

Even he wouldn't have done this. 15 days for assaulting a child is pretty light.

Idiot deserves every minute of his sentence and hopefully he'll be banned from coaching for good as well. Definitely not the kind of coaching influence we need to be teaching kids.

A guy I played against in a pick-up Hockey League in Sask in the 80's , Punched out a Ref . He has a lifetime ban from any CAHL event or cannot enter the building. He cannot watch any WHL junior, or participate as a volunteer, a coach, or a player in any organized Canadian Hockey League.

He was one of the first people in Canada to get the book thrown at him, and rightly so.
