That brings up a thought. Why should gay people be penalized because straight people put no sanctity in their marriages?Drug and smoke free trading.

And to solve these types of situations you think it is a good idea to create more laws interfering in people's lives. To heck with the couple constantly arguing for 10 years in front of their children, you want your spoiled cousin to have to stick it out. That all makes perfect Republican sense.

I didn't say it wasn't their right. Making it easy minimalizes the value of marriage.
Thanks for proving my point. If they didn't end so easily and quickly then maybe people would be less likely to jump into a questionable marriage to begin with.
Actually it would require people to have a little fortitude and not cut and run every time things get a little tough. You are correct, marriages end for a variety of reasons. According to a poll by MSN Living, 44% of divorced people said they felt that lack of equity led to their divorce, 46% said they felt that they married too young, 41% said they were not prepared for what they were getting into.
In that same poll, 62% said they wished they had worked harder to save their marriage.
Which points back to my original point that if marriage is not so easy to get out of then maybe they will look at it deeper and harder before getting into it.
Making the mistake easy to walk away from and forget increases the likelihood that it will be made again. The 2011 Census reports that 12% of marriages are the 2nd time for people and 3% are the 3rd or more marriage. If it is less easy to get out then you are less likely to be stupid enough to jump right into another questionable one.

I had a similar thought. Why do liberals fight so hard for the right for gays to marry yet argue to strongly in favor of divorce being easy? That is oxymoronic, in my opinion.
Judging from what I am seeing here, it is the liberal straight people who value marriage so little and think divorce should be easier than ordering a Happy Meal. So in essence, liberals are trashing the sanctity of straight marriage and then arguing for the value of gay marriage. See my question above...

The fact of the matter is, divorce is acceptable enough for people to enter marriages thinking "If it doesn't work, we can just get divorced".
I don't know how to properly or fairly legislate against this problem, but it is a problem. A major one. Making the argument that a kid is better off in a broken home than one with fighting is like saying "Yeah, a punch in the face sucks, but it sure beats a kick in the nuts."
It's not saying a whole lot.

Why is it a good thing to make divorce harder? Sure idea around marriage is to stay together forever, but it's an agreement and the government should have zero say in if two people want to dissolve that contract. The fact that people would want the government to be able to keep people from getting divorced is ridiculous. Besides, it's not like making marriage harder to get out of is going to make these marriages better. I also doubt it would keep people from getting married to start with because most people who get married never envision their relationship not working.

Who says marriage has any value?
Marriage is an imaginary thing to begin with.
The difference between an unmarried person and a married one is simply a piece of paper.....it does not make one more valuable than the other....it doesn't bring any value either....although it does bring various rights and benefits and thus people get into it.
But intrinsically when dealing with what a marriage is supposed to do (form a union) it's not any different than a couple who has decided to live together without the piece of paper.
Kinda like driving a car.
The license doesn't bring any value, but it does bring rights and benefits.....saying that I have a license vs. someone that doesn't have a license doesn't make me a better driver.
And maybe it will become even more destructive hurting the most innocent of lives....children.
In this case the best thing to do is to let people do what they want to do....infringing on their lives to force them to think about their decisions is not the way to go.

I am...I'm just not too stupid to see that not every "liberal ideal" is a good one.
