    New to Cards

    Hello All:

We are new to the Sports Card Hobby. We have mostly been in game used jersey's, signed authentics etc.

As of a couple months ago we have purchased a couple of groups of cards totalling about 4 thousand. Not much by alot of you folks on here though.

We are going into a couple of shows in the next couple of weeks to see how we make out.

Nothing we have is a complete set except for the 90-91 pro set/score upper deck that nobody wants.

We were looking for advice as to market the cards. Do we put them alphabetical order by player? We have them in numerical order by card type and year right now.

Also is anyone on the forum live close to Saskatoon, Sask. Canada? if so maybe we can strike up a deal on cards an jersey's

I do not mind dealing further out but we are new at this so please bear with us.

    Thank you.

When trading online, there is no limit. I often trade with members from europe. They collect heavely their native player like Jagr and other. Mainly once you get the hang of trading online, it's easy. You need to understand the mailing cost, how to package the cards (bubble envelope, top, loader and soft sleeve) also if you mail one or two cards adding one of the dummy card prevent cards to be bent. As long as you stick under 100 gram you will not pay more Canada($1.35), USA ($2.20) and international ($4.36) for under 100g in bubble mailer.

A great way to manage cards is to use SCF Inventory and you can enter your trader and personal collection items. It make it easy to show what you have to others. It's easy enough to use and you can upload images. Hit the help tab to view demo on how to get started. Then I suggest you keep the card sorted in year, brand name and card number. Then it's easy to find the cards you need to pull when you need them. The inventory can filter player list, team list so no need to srot your card physicly in that manner, much easier if they are by year and brand to find them and the inventory let you get all sorting you may dream of like only jersey, only rookie etc...

New members need to send first with establish member until you reach 20 positive feedback. Make sure to read the rules carfully. As for value, beckett.com online cost like 7-$8 a month if you collect only one sport and if you use the inventory then you can save the card value in it and get a evaluation of you cards via the inventory. Then you have a idea of what each card are worth an much easier to trade down the road. Trading by BV work well but for selling expect to have to sell much lower in many case then the High beckett BV. Often between 20% and 50% of the high bv unless they are hot player/card.

But you need a list of your cards and good to have image of the jersey so you can pass what you have to other.

    Hope you enjoy SCF.

    Hello Coolhandluke:

What part of Canada are you from?

Thank you for all your help. I have some reading to do for sure. I am not sure if this would hurt or not but i am not to computer literate. Download and email a picture no problem but when it comes to putting all the cards in and pictures of them all i dont have that much time. I will read up on it and then see what i can put in. Some game worn jersey collector's have web shots or something like that. Do not do that either.

Oh well Thank you again for all your assistance. Will keep in touch.

Any other Canadians live close/Western Canada? Look forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks,

    Chris

I am from quebec. But like I said trading with person from anywhere is easy on a site like our. We agree here on card to trade and then mail it to the other person and leave a feedback once both side receive their end. We use a application that track the trade between each member and you can dispute a trade if issue arise and a moderator of the site work on the dispute to resolve the issue. but most trade never end up in dispute. So it's easy to trade with person far away and open up the possibility to find what you need.

Also the inventory, you do not need to add scan. It's easy to add card and even more so if you enter cards from the same card set as there is a fast entry page for this. Just watch a video I made on adding cards to the inventory and you will see it's easy to do. In all case you need a list of cards to trade or sell and the inventory is great to build just text list and it's fast.

Trading in person rarely happen and the only time you see this, it's unusual. At time localy you can see trade night in card shop but not many do them and hard to catch the info to know when they happen and where. All trader eiher use images to show their cards for trade or trade list. Without this, it's hard to catch someone attention on your cards as how it work is you need to publice your card list in the trade forum for person to find the cards they need and that is how most trade are initiated.

There is no right or wrong way to trade cards, some members prefer lists and some prefer photobuckets. Even if you stick to the trader page like I do you will encounter sellers who prefer to trade off of a cards Sales Value (SV) vice its Book Value (BV). Since my collection is quite large and to better track what I still need I prefer lists. You can check out my traders and want list at the links:

As for sorting out cards for presentation at a show:

-I think it depends upon the card value
-lower end cards not worth much, arrange them into (for example) "$1, box/rows" and "less than $5 each, box/rows" and "$5 to $10 each, box/rows" for those people who don't have lots of money and would enjoy rifling through a bunch of cards organized in that fashion. You can even split those categories up to have (for example) cards worth $5 to $10 that are jerseys, cards worth $5 to $10 that are autographed, cards worth $5 to $10 that are both jerseys and autos, etc.
-more valuable cards should be organized into separate player sections for those who hunt them; arrange them alphabetically
-the really top end cards are usually displayed separately and in some secure fashion away from prying hands
-I'd split up cards you mention being arranged into years and organize them as above, unless it's newer wax and you want to catch collectors trying to make the newest sets of cards. So if you've got some of the latest wax being sold, keep it together until the wave of new wax set collectors has come and gone, then split it up (as described above)
-at any show you're at, take a peek at how other vendors have arranged their cards/displays, and pick and choose what you like from their ideas...and ask them their advice on the most effective means of marketing cards
-you could consider leaving all the Cup cards together and in their various years, since there are collectors who focus on the highest-end wax and will be happy to look through whatever Cup cards you might have if they're all together
-whatever you do, label the groupings of cards so it's clear how they're organized and you'll get instant appreciation from anyone skimming your table

Just a few thoughts. There are no correct ways of doing shows. The key is organizing your presentation so people can more readily see what you've got and not move on in frustration when they get confused as to what you might have to offer. Good luck!
