In the 1980s, fleetingly, ABC TV televised ice hockey. Australian ice hockey. My memory of the results is dim and blurred, and that's what the action looked like as far as I can remember – the cameras, perched precariously in media-unfriendly suburban rinks, struggled to keep up with the likes of Ringwood Rangers star forward Sandy Gardner as he rushed from one side of the screen to the other.
Ever since, the impossible dreams for the tenacious minor sport have been: decent stadiums; and dedicated TV coverage.
Finally, parts of those dreams are coming true.
