I think it's definitely news. It sucks that it is, but it is based off of the fact that most professional athletes don't come out until they are retired. Although I believe that there are some female athletes that have been "out" while playing. The fact that the #1 draft pick in the WNBA this year has come out is a pretty big deal. It's not as big as if a top star in the NBA, NFL, or MLB came out but still news.
