I havent used money orders in a long as time. I believe there is a number on the stub or maybe its on the main money order that you can call.

Contact the place where you purchased the MO and give them the stub or receipt. They shouod be able to use that info to determine ONLY if the MO
has been cashed-in.
If it is indeed lost in the mail, there maybe a period of time that you'll have to wait before filing a claim.
I'd check first with the place where you bought the MO and see if someone cashed it in. They can advise you from there.

Yes, give them the stub and they'll check if its been cashed yet. If its not cashed, then just cancel the money order. They'll charge a small fee for it but since you said its a large sum, then its worth the fee. And then just buy another money order and send it. This is the experience I had with a bank money order. I don't think you can cancel a postal money order so ask them what options you have.
