    NHL 2013 Draft Talk

Eh? Didn't see a thread for it.

They all booed Bettman....I need a moment. I laughed way too hard.

And Nathan MacKinnon was drafted first, overall.

The first four picks made perfect sense for the respective teams even though many were surprised.

MacKinnon was the best player in the draft and Patrick Roy knew first hand what he is capable of from his time coaching in the QMJHL. I knew the Avalanche weren't bluffing when they announced their intentions leading up to the draft. They would have been crazy not to take him.

Florida wanted a big centre, they obviously were hoping Jones would go first overall so they could select MacKinnon but when the Avs snatched him they went to plan "B" and took Barkov. They addressed what they thought was their biggest need and didn't just take Jones for the sake of taking the higher ranked player.

Drouin is going to be an absolute beast in Tampa if he plays with Stamkos. The lightning just chose the second piece of what can be the most dynamic duo in hockey. Those two are going to tear it up together and Stamkos could be a 70+ goal guy if Drouin is feeding him to his full potential. Tampa fans should be excited.

Nashville got the steal of the draft taking Jones and essentially replacing Suter's skills at the blueline for a lot less money (at least for now). Nashville was stunned to see Jones drop to 4th and couldn't ask for a better draft pick at #4. He can even chip in on the offence since Nashville just can't score goals. It's not going to be fun to play against Nashville in a couple of years, it won't be exciting hockey but it will be effective hockey.

Very well put. I was surprised, as many were, that Florida went with Barkov. But when I thought about it more, it made sense, they can really use his size up the middle. They've also had trouble scoring, so adding Barkov to an already young group of prospects like Huberdeau and Bjugstad will give a much needed boost to their offense, and make them incredibly hard to defend in the next couple of years. Their defense isn't really terrible, they got Petrovic coming up and used their 2nd rounder (almost a 1st rounder at 31st overall) on a d-man in McCoshen. They can also hit the free agent market to pick up a d-man as well if they feel they need to. Was Jones the better guy to go with? Probably, but Florida really didn't go wrong with Barkov and should pay off well for them.

But Nashville certainly did get the steal of the draft, don't even want to imagine what him and Weber can do for Nashville's already solid defense in a couple of years

maybe its just me, but how does Calgary pass, not once but TWICE, on drafting a potential franchise goalie?

i know they have a need everywhere, but I'm stunned by it.

You could actually say three times lol, even though no one had Fucale in the top 10. I'm really surprised he went out of the 1st round.

Shockingly though, Feaster did pretty well today, Poirier was the only out of the box pick, and he wasn't that far off really. Monahan will help them tremendously
