2013-14 Off-Season Canadiens Chat Thread
Lots going on today...
Yannick Weber did not receive a qualifying offer and will become a UFA on Friday.
Danny Kristo has been traded to the Rangers for Christian Thomas.
And it sounds like Lecavalier took a good look at going to Montreal but has notified the team that they are out.
Always more to discuss - chat away, gang.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Apparently Vinny went to the Flyers. Don't think it's much of a loss to the Habs though, since it's a 5 year deal.
I'm surprised Kristo was traded. What's Thomas like? I haven't read anything on him before.
Not surprised on Weber though... he couldn't find a groove on the team and was always in/out of the lineup. Hopefully Beaulieu/Tinordi take some good steps next year.

Not sure about the Kristo trade....if indeed he didn't want to play in MTL than I sure hope MB shopped him well. The whole Gomez/mcdonagh trade sure left a sour taste in my mouth.

Thomas is a bit undersized but he's fast and he's a sniper, put up over 50 goals in juniors a little over a year ago, and had 19 goals in 73 games in his 1st AHL season this year. I always liked him and am disappointed he's gone, but am happy we got Kristo in return

Apparently he's Steve Larmer's son so he should be a hard nosed player with leadership if the apple didn't fall far from the tree :)
As for Vinny, I am honestly glad. I like the fact that Bergevin is trying to rebuild this team based on youth and I don't think tying that much money for 5 years would have been a good idea. Besides, Lecavalier would have been under way too much scrutiny in Montreal and the pressure would have been awful...could have taken some of the heat of Price but you know...Bergevin did say he'd do his food shopping this year so it's all good lol...
The one player I would like to see signed by Montreal is Nathan Horton...Size would help and I just have a good feeling about him. Although I will admit wishing that we sign a Bruin makes me kind of nauseous...

You never had a problem with Ryder.

I think that had the Habs acquired Lecavalier in 2009 or sooner, yes that immense pressure would have been there. At the time, the media was absolutely out of control - the "mob story" about Hamrlik and the Kostitsyns, the constant stories about Price and the other young guys and their "partying" and all that crap really was embarrassing. But the smart Habs fans, of which there are many, would realize that Lecavalier in 2013 isn't the same player he was then, and the expectations would have been lowered to an extent. Yes he'd still be expected to perform, but in more of a mentorship role and as a primary but not the sole offensive contributor. He's long removed from battling for the Rocket Richard Trophy, but can still put up 25-30 goals a year.
My belief is that Bergevin wouldn't have wanted to go more than 3 years on the deal, and that may have been what tilted things in Philly's favour. He'll be 38 when that contract expires, and he'll likely retire after it's over. The Montreal experiment could have produced another 1-2 year deal after, but he's always been about security and stability for his family. So it goes...

Ryder was more useful last year than a Cole with a chip on his shoulder. Letting him walk at theend of the season was the right thing to do though.

I can't wait till the start of the next season ! I think it's gonna be a great year. Christian Thomas intrigues me a lot. He looks like he could be a pretty good sniper with great speed.
Pacioretty should be better, Galchenyuk should be more constant, Gallagher will do well I think. And if Eller continues his huge progress like he's done the past 2 years, it should be a great year for him too!! Maybe Beaulieu will start the season on the regular line-up ?
I like Gionta but I hope he will be traded and that Bergevin signs/trade for a big player to replace him, like Clarkson, Horton or B. Ryan ! That would be amazing.

Well we've got our new goalie coach, and no big surprise that it's Stephen Waite from the Blackhawks organization. Bergevin knows first-hand how Waite helped out Niemi & Crawford, and look where it got the Hawks. Hopefully he can do the same for CP.
