I started doing only RC's and RC parallels of players that ever dressed for the Caps. I have recently expanded it to include autos and GU'd of said players as well, both on their RC team (if not the Caps), shown with the Caps, or any other GU/auto if the first two conditions can't be met. It narrows it enough to make it seem possible, but it's also difficult, especially with older issues/players, so the thrill of the hunt still exists :)

Your situation is why I am not a team or player collector LOL.
Being of modest means, I have to limit what I collect and maximize value. For this reason, I collect rookie cards of the best players on every team, but I only collect SP Authentic rookies (unless a player doesn't have one - in which case I take what I can get). This way, I never get caught in a quandary such as you find yourself.
The days of one player playing for one team for their whole career (a la Steve Yzerman and Mario Lemieux) are over. The salary cap and free agency ensure that players move more frequently than ever.
I say you should keep your most treasured cards and move the rest.

on my end, i only care about what team they are depicted on the card. so if it's sharks related, i'm going for it. i don't super-collect anything other than my main pc player (logan couture), but will keep anything from san jose. i still actively look for players who have been traded or left the team as long as they are in sharks gear. it's really cool to have a collection full of black, white, and teal. it's like a history of the team. in terms of current rookies and players, i would get them, but just not go nuts on them unless they were definitely the 'next big thing'.

The way I see it, is that I put more emphasis on goalies then others players so even if one is traded then I still collect anything in Habs jersey of him. To me what is important is the logo. So I try to get what I can and most of my player PC are the great goaltender Montreal had. This way, even after a trade then I still have habs cards. The idea is more to look at it more in a global way then per players. I did collect many Carey Price but now I am more looking for other as well. For a player like Patrick Roy, I am only looking for the cards from the year he was playing with Montreal so 1986-96. This way you are not tempted to try to get every card they produce these days of him. Much more fun when you look at I this way when a player is traded, it not as bad.

I do the same except for a couple of players that I don't actively look for, Adam Foote and Jeff Carter, because of the circumstances they were traded under. Other than that, if they're pictured in the uniform I want it.

Looks like am safe with Bergeron, a Bruin for life, he has a Cup so no need to pull an Alfy or Iggy etc, not sure about my Seguin's though, players in Dallas seem to fade away in popularity/value. Really want some Loui Eriksson cards, but will have to wait til he has some Bruin cards.

I tend to keep the majority of the Penguins who get traded and even collect some when they are on their new team. I do have a few Penguin collectors who contact me in regards to ones who are traded /released/signed away. I usually will trade them away for some of their dupes i may not have or sell them. But I keep all of my GU/AU/RCs though even if they are gone and will still pick them up after they leave as well. Plus Im always open to trading my current PCs for the 4 major players I collect.
