I project him to be a big, physical defenseman, probably a number 4, 5, or 6 guy.

A brutal first round pick for the Rangers at #10 overall, ahead of the likes of Cam Fowler, Jaden Schwartz, Vlad Tarasenko, and even bigger/better defensive defenseman Jarred Tinordi. That's not mentioning guys like Brandon Gormley, Mark Pysyk and Evgeny Kuznetsov, also highly rated in that draft year, ranked in the top 10 in NA skaters (Kuznetsov was ranked 3rd of European skaters), who were still available as well. It was, for me, the epitome of Glen Sather showing how out of touch he is nowadays. In the last three years, the two first round terrible picks that stand out for me are McIlrath and the Flames taking Mark Jankowski. I'd be shocked if either guy was a top-end NHL talent.

The thing is, we really didn't need Fowler at the time cause we drafted Del Zotto and Sanguinetti before that, 2 offensive d-men. Ik Sanguinetti didn't pan out for us, but he was a 1st rounder and had good potential. We really needed a shutdown guy and Sather hoped McIlrath would be that guy. Being injured has set him back a bit, but he can easily grab a bottom pairing spot to clear the crease, which Rangers could desperately use right now. He won't put up the offensive numbers, but he can definitely help out defensively. There were a few forwards we could've gotten, I'll give you that much. Figured I'd comment on Fowler though as I've seen him brought up multiple times as someone the Rangers should have drafted. And while Sather has had a couple of questionable picks, he has also found some gems in Stepan (2nd round), Callahan (4th round), Hagelin (6th round), and the biggest one of them all in Lundqvist (7th round)
