Prizm ... what do you guys think ...

I am wondering what you guys are thinking towards Panini's upcoming release of Prizm hockey . I have seen a pre-sale price of 1086 CAD for a 12 box case = 90.50 per box + tax ofcourse ... suppose to get 2 auto's ( stickers i think ) and 2 or 3 parallels , also 1 RC per pack so we know the RC's will hold zero value unless the top guys are short printed . I liked the bonus packs last year .. cool shiny design and thought overall sharp looking , but i am thinking the boxes price may be a bit high on this product . Thinking of ordering some just cause i like the look of the cards , but just not sure there will be much value there . What do you guys think ....

I think the product looks amazing. I would bust a few boxes for sure.

Ill be honest I do not think Prizm will do very well on the market. The sticker autos are a huge downgrade and like you said the regular rookies will be worthless unless some are SPed. The price on the boxes are too high for what you will receive. I think it may do well at first because of the new rookies but will fade very fast. The cards look very nice but so did prime.

If it was me I would pass but I have been wrong many times before.

the big rookie will definitely be SP'ed so they will do well. As far as how the product will do, it will depend on what the auto checklist looks like.

The inserts look AWESOME, hopefully each box has at least one insert numbered to /50 or less to improve the value.

I like the product as a concept but believe it will drop to $75 or even $70 relatively quickly. If you bust early, flip what you can immediately and then wait for the drop. If Panini is smart, they will SP the top 10 RC (one per box), which might keep it buoyed, but by Black Friday it will be down.

It will be interesting to see how all the retail parallels do, with both Target and Wal-Mart exclusives. I will probably be on the lookout at Target (Wal-Mart hardly ever carries hockey down here in AZ) and buy a few rack packs or however they come.

The big rookies aren't SPed in football, at least not the base version. You can pick up Lucks and RG3s last year for under $5. I really like the look of it but don't think it justifies the price point.

I'm in agreement with you. It looks like Topps Chrome baseball but at about 150% of the price. I know you can't compare baseball to hockey, but that's a pretty big difference for 'similar' products. Prizm did not outperform Chrome in football or baseball and Prizm started at the same price point. The RCs will do well out of the gate, as will the /10 parallels, but the checklist is so diluted that hitting something big is going to be rare.

The RCs are SPed compared to the regular base, but nothing I've read suggests any of the 100 12-13 RCs will be SPed compared to one another. As was mentioned, they weren't in football or basketball, so I'd be surprised if they don't mention something about it since it would be a huge selling point. Also, are there inserts in the 'hobby' packs? The early sell sheets only mention inserts in the 'retail' version. Hobby has parallels, of course, but even one /50 per box is weak with the big checklist. The only thing that sold out of the 'bonus' packs were the Golds /10 and the SP autos (all the 'decent' names).

I agree with you. I was really hoping that it would be a strong product (me likey shiny), but at close to $100 a box, there are a lot more disappointments than not. The top golds /10 from last year struggle to hit a couple hundred bucks consistently. A 300 card checklist is going to produce way more $20 cards than $200 cards as 'case hits'. I think this also misses since Panini chose to not do redemptions for the 13-14 RCs like Artifacts and they'll hold them until Rookie Anthology. As a set collector, that stinks knowing your set rides on a completely different product that won't get released for months...

This product looks like one that is supposed to be supported on the RCs, but they threw in parallels and sticker autos to jack up the price. That also draws all the attention away from the base set (and the RCs).

I'll reserve final judgement until this gets released and breaks start rolling out, but I think it was a huge missed opportunity. If this released at $65-75 a box (like chrome usually does in other sports), it would have been huge. At $100/box, the momentum will be gone by the time people want to break it (and the distribution price won't let it get to $75 very quickly). That's my opinion, for what that's worth...

I've, admittedly, not been real high on Panini as of late...

Honestly I don't think it will do well. People will be spending huge money as it is on this year's hockey products. Prizm does look good, I must admit, but you will only see good money on the rare cards which may only be 1-2 per case. You will have to hit a short printed auto, RC or sick patch just to see any sort of money back on this product. People will be spending their money elsewhere in no time this year.

Sad to see such a good looking product look like it won't do well. I still have hopes for it though, we'll see how it goes.
