especially if putting away, id go with buying singles and lots on ebay and here. 95% of the time you will get much more for your money than a box, as an example, a box of Upper Deck Series 1 will yield 6 rcs (non auto, and non jersey cards), 2 jersey cards and a handful of inserts. U might hit a couple extra things, but maybe not. Here on SCF u can easily pickup one lot of 80 autos and game used jersey cards for the same price.

Just some food for thought :)

If breaking boxes, i suggest ITG

Heh, I mentioned the case break up there. But I also spent a whopping eight bucks on a Prime box break two days before and got a Cory Schneider Prime Patch /23............I got VERY lucky :)

To me, they're worth it on a whim. Like RGM says tho, we're allllll different...........

Where do you purchase the box breaks? this site im guessing but besides through here?

Hey Jordan, if you're at all interested in box breaks, I suggest checking out Clouts n Chara's channel on Vaughn Live. They are by far the best in the business when i comes to box breaks. Also, while you're there, check out the Digital Man Cave channel on Vaughn. If you like talking to other collectors, this is the place to go!

Welcome to SCF! I buy into quite a few group breaks from several different sellers on eBay - it is probably just as hit-or-miss as buying boxes in the long run, but I like to analyze the checklists and bid on "bargain teams" that hit a lot. I've been a big fan of breakawaysc over in Hamilton for over a year now - Chuck and Matt do a great job busting wax and shipping your cards quickly and safely! They post on here in the Group Break section and regularly run eBay auctions, as well as their own site.

I've only done a few, in the last couple weeks, from 2 different eBay sellers, but there are quite a few breaks available through SCF affiliates

There is no right and wrong answer here. It all about having fun.

If you are just starting off with $300 I would try numerous things.

-Buy a box of Artifacts or Series One when the come out.
-Spend some money on singles and have some cards that are PC.
-Browse through the buying/selling section here and see what cards catch your eyes. You never know what you will like.

Maybe just split your money up into $100/$100/$100 on those three options. See what you like to do the most and have lots of fun doing it.

Remember that when you open a box to post the results in the box break section here and say that they cards that are not PC cards for you and for trade/for sale. The fun part is then going through other people's cards and the art of negotiating a trade or sale. You will find that some people are great to work with and some are hard to work with and some fall right in the middle.

You would be surprised at how many 'friendships' that I have made on here, hobbyinsider and cloutsnchara over the years. You will always read posts on these sites of people complaining about a trade gone bad or an eBay transaction gone bad but those are far and fewer between. In this hobby of ours their are a lot of great people who are willing to help.

Plus one more thing about this hobby and then I will stop. To me at least this is such a great hobby because you have something to show for it. An example that I can think of is this; If I go and play a round of golf it will cost me about $100. By the time that I factor in my greens fees, cart (I am too lazy to walk), a beer or two and lunch. I can go and buy a box of cards for around $100. Sure playing a round of golf will take around five hours to do and you get a memory out of it and maybe a scorecard. Now if I go and bust a box of cards I have some cards in my hands to show for it. Busting the box will only take minutes as opposed to hours but you get a really good rush doing so. Then you can spend time scanning and posting the cards. Talking to others in trades and sales as well.

What I am saying is that if you buy a box and it is an absolute dud and you are not happy with the results you will still have something in your hands. Go play any sport or paintball or garden or play video games or read books or most other hobbies and you have nothing to show when you are all done.

Once more last thing and then I am done. Some hobbies you do have something to show for it like woodworking or restoring cars I can think of. The problem is that if you ever get tired of your hobby to sell those types of things you need the right buyer to some around because I can not just ship a car from Canada to Europe. But if you collect hockey cards and ever get tired of it you can just throw them all up in a sales thread or on eBay and get money from your hobby.
