General managers should be committed for giving any athlete that much. Athletes should be committed for wanting that much. Both sides are crazy...

When you look at athletes getting paid based on money they bring in and not what they actually do in society, they're paid pretty fairly.

I think we can all agree that what any athlete does, it's not nearly as valuable to society as Doctors, Fire Firefighters, Police, etc. Heck - it's nowhere near as important as what Politicians do.... even if most of them are bad at their jobs.
To say that no athlete is worth what they're being paid is an absurd statement though. Athletes ABSOLUTELY deserve their fair of what the owners make off their backs, and relative to their impact on the team's success. Show me the Doctor that is able to charge $100+ x 20,000 to see them operate, and you'll be showing me one that's making more than most athletes.
As for Kessel, I'm usually one of the first people to get in line and bash the Leafs for the silly mistakes they make. This one? I think the deal is a very good one.
Phil Kessel is an elite goal scorer in the NHL, and that is a role that will earn 8+ million on the open market. He's only 25 years old... so the term isn't even a big deal, IMO. He'll be 33 in the last year of that deal - hardly an age where he might be washed up.
Truth is, it's either pay him that money or he walks..... and then pay it to someone else to replace his scoring.
They got a guaranteed 30 goal scorer, who is likely to hit 40 (my opinion) and will end up with something in the 75-85 point range..... for $8 million. When you consider they signed Clarkson, who won't score half that, for $6.5 (same money they're paying Phaneuf) it looks like a very good deal.

How about this signing, the manager thinks he's in the same company as Stamkos, Ovy, Malkin, Crosby and a few others, but he had to really sign this guy, and I guess that's why he low balled there best d-man last year, Franson, now the list of right winger's is bad.
Phil-35-60 goals at least.
Clarkson 15-20 goals.
Kulemin 4-7 goals.
Orr- maybe a goal

So tired of this argument. NHL, just like any other league, is a business. And a business that makes billions of dollars should reward the people responsible for making that money. It's similar to the president/CEO of a big business, or movie stars in Hollywood.
I was actually talking to someone about this exact same thing earlier today. Let's say you had the option of entertainment (such as sports, TV, etc.) or you could give all the money you would put towards that entertainment to the police/fire departments and hospitals, regardless of if you or anyone you cared about was in any kind of situation where they would require those services. Call me cynical, but that's not going to happen.
Entertainment is a business, whereas emergency services are not. That's why you see the huge difference in pay.
As for Kessel, overpayment in my eyes. If he's worth that much, then imagine what a bonafide star (as in Stamkos, Toews, etc.) would go for. Yikes.

I like the signing, someone would have offered up that kind of money on the free market and we would have lost our best player for nothing. Im just happy he is signed and he doesnt have to worry about the media being all over him all season about his contract he can just worry about the game.
this signing is irrelevant to the Franson contract. We are pretty much flat broke this season which is why we wanted to get Franson to sign for cheap for a year and earn his contract for next season when we actually have a bit of money. Next season the salary cap with go up again.
