As far as I am concerned a fake autograph is the same as counterfeiting or even forgery as it is someone signing something saying it is the actual person when in truth its not.

He was using the mail system to receive money and ship the forged goods. Therefore it was considered mail fraud which is a federal offense which is why he got jail time for the crime.
