Need some opinions on a new project
Hey all,
I'm trying my darnedest to come up with a unique idea for a new project. I've had a bit of a hiatus from the hobby for the last six months or so due to foreseen obligations (work - can you believe it?), yet with winter and thus downtime upon us, I need something to keep me occupied. The last time I frequented SCF I had conceived a project that consisted of collecting an autograph, memorabilia piece, and rookie card of the first overall pick since my year of birth, 1987. It seemed like a good idea at the time; however it unfortunately resulted in forcing me to collect pieces from Alexandre Daigle, Roman Hamrlik, Rick DiPietro, etc.. Don't get me wrong - they're much better hockey players than I will ever be. But sadly, they are simply unappealing overall.
This brings us to my new project idea: Collecting a hard-signed autograph from the captain of each Stanley Cup winning team and the captain of each Stanley Cup finalist since 1987, pictured in the jersey of the team in which they won, or were the finalist for, the Stanley Cup.
Here are the two aspects I would appreciate opinions on:
1. Is it a good idea?
2. Since I was born on October 22 and was not alive for the 1987 Stanley Cup Championship, should I include 1987 in my project, or begin in 1988?
Any and all opinions would be appreciated! Thanks!
Eric

I would include 87 because it's the year you were born. Are you going to try to stick with the same style of card or mix it up?

Yes it is a cool idea and I might steal it for my son. You will need 17 Cup Champions & 17 Cup Finalist.

Sounds like a neat idea to me. There will obviously be a few big money cards in there (neither Gretzky nor Lemieux are cheap, and while not as much $$$ as those two..... Crosby & Messier command top dollars most the time too) but there's also going to be lots that are very easy on the wallet, or wouldn't take a ton to trade for.
You'll likely have to grab some 90s cards (I have a feeling that Darrien Hatcher hasn't signed many cards recently) and certainly lots of modern ones too.
Are you planning to only get one of each player fitting that bill - or one for every time they did?? (i.e. Lemieux, he won two Cups with Pittsburgh).
Should be able to get a lot of nice variety picking them up.

I think as far as a project goes, it's a great idea, I'd worry that you will end up in the same cycle as last time as you are going to have to buy cards that you wouldn't normally want to add (sure some of those captain's of those teams over the last 17 years you don't like) I would look at the list of players involved before you jump in with two feet

i think it would be interesting, and to after you get your years done, start going back in time....but you will get expensive at that point...

You and Sid are born in 87. Collect Crosby's first 87 cards.

One issue is you will have to collect multiples of same player
Greztky 2
Lemieux 2
Messier 2
Sakic 2
Stevens 2
Yzerman 3
Toews 2
15/25 winners are multiples!
plus Hatcher, Andreychuk, Brind A'mour and Brown, fine players, but not too exciting...just something to think about...Last edited by mooneyes; 10-31-2013 at 10:52 AM.

Thanks everyone for the opinions!
I'll definitely be mixing up the style. I may have to accept sticker autographs if hard-signed aren't available from certain players.
I'll be getting each pair from each year. I plan on making a couple nice display cases to house the collection. For example:
1987 - Wayne Gretzky (in Oilers uni) vs. Dave Poulin (in Flyers uni)
1988 - Wayne Gretzky (in Oilers uni) vs. Ray Bourque (in Bruins uni)
1989 - Lanny McDonald (in Flames uni) vs. Bob Gainey (in Canadiens uni)
and so on until
2013 - Jonathan Toews (in Hawks uni) vs. Zdeno Chara (in Bruins uni)
I decided to go with this concept because it reduced the number of cards to collect by 50% from my last project, and I believe it will be more appealing display-wise. Also, I'm a big fan of autographs. I really had no strong desire to be collecting memorabilia pieces and rookie cards of 90's players.
I think I'll give this project the green light for now and see where it takes me. I feel I can't go wrong collecting multiple autographs of Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, etc., and I'm in no rush to do it! Thanks again to everyone who replied to my thread!
