    Massive Leafs Collection

    Hey guys...

Ive always enjoyed reading this forum for quality opinions, so here I ask...

Im running into some financial difficulty and considering selling my pc collection of Leafs. Ive been working with it since 05-06 and have amassed about 15,000 bv last I checked which was a few years ago. Im sure its over 20K since I get higher and higher end over time.

So my question is this. What do you guys think I could get for it? Or what is the best way to sell it?

Im still undecided whether to sell, as I may regret it. But tough times make for tough decisions.

I've traded with many of you and you know I have a respectable collection. I would hate to let it go to some low ball flipper after all my hard work.

Your thoughts and opinions are appreciated.

    Hi Randy!!

Just a few questions for you, since I don't have any idea whatsoever about your PC. How big is your $15-20K collection? Is it all 05/06 and up? How much of it is.........junk? And by junk I mean that I have a 400+ Ryan Kesler PC that's "worth" $8900+ but I know exactly what it's worth and it isn't that inflated figure there.

If I had to sell tomorrow I'd have to go with eBay because that's still the largest audience I could find for it, that's why they charge you them ridiculous fees eh?

I know I'd get great money on about 100 of them, almost decent money on another 100 and I'd probably be looking at almost giving away the rest. That's the reality of it all.

I decided to get rid of a lot of my PC players a while ago, Kariya and Hasek and Joseph and Naslund and Sedins and Avalanche Roy and all of my rookie cards, I've slowly been putting them into Turbo Lister and I'm realizing that I'll be lucky to get my starting bid of 39 cents for 90% of them.

That said, maybe your collection is A LOT better than mine. There's a way better market for Habs and Leafs than for Canucks...........

Randy you will get 60-70% less for your Leaf Collection if you sell it intact. The reason? You have to actually find somebody that wants to part with that much money.

If you piece it out, it can be sold at a handsome profit, but not all together. I once had 500K cards. It's taken me almost 12 years to sell off everything and get down under 12,000 cards. Had I tried to move these cards all at once, I'd have lost my shorts. It's been a pain, but I have managed to net about 50% more in profit than if I was lucky enough to find somebody to make an offer on it.

Very hard to sell it to one person. The reason is that they probably have a good part of them and would only offer you a low price or to buy only the one he needs and each time you bundle cards, people expect to make a good deal. This mean lower prices. Selling them one by one, it's a lot of work and take a lot of time. Usually it easy enough to move the good cards but all other may either sell really low or not at all.

If you are in need of money and if selling only the best card is enough, then maybe this is the best way to go and keep the other you probably will not get much if sold. Then if you want to start collecting down the road when things are better, you will have a base.

To put some numbers to it, for the last couple of years I've been paying 8-10% BV for items in bulk, 10-15% if I get to pick through in bulk, 15-20% if I am cherry picking non-PC items and about 25-33% for the best items for my PC guys (which for Leafs are Salming and Vaive, plus some Sittler). Some pay more, some pay less. I flip very few of them, trade others, but mostly I am just looking to build a large collection for as little as possible.

I like Luke's idea of just selling a few of the top pieces, since those will generally get you the higher % of BV and hopefully will help with your financial woes. If you try to dump it all at once, you'll get less and possibly regret it in the future (surely I would regret such a move with my collection).

Good luck - and lmk if you want to move some Salming and Vaive!
