Cal Ripken Jr in NYC
Ripken will be doing a moderated interview and talking about sportsmanship at the 92nd Street Y in NYC on March 9. He's my favorite baseball player of all time, it's my birthday, and I live a couple hours away so I'm going.
This is a ticketed event but if you are under 35 tickets are only $15 which isn't bad. Then after the talk Cal will be signing his new book "Squeeze Play" (part of his series of novels for kids). You have to be at the talk to attend the signing.
I have been to events at this place before and, like most book signings, they will let you buy as many copies as you want to get signed. So if anyone wants me to have Ripken sign a copy for you I'm happy to help a few people out for whatever the cost of the book is (looks like it'll be $16.99 plus tax) and a couple dollars to ship it to you. Figure about $20 or 21 dollars for a Cal Ripken Jr signed book. If he'll do it I can ask him to personalize it for you too.
Or better yet, if you're in the area you can go to the event! Here's the event link and to purchase tickets:

P.S. - I've never seen a 'book signing' thread on here but seems like it would be a cool thing to keep each other updated about... when athletes have book signings. I've been to some great ones, most recently with Mike Tyson where he was posing for photos with everyone and signing whatever memorabilia you brought. I got a 16x20 signed in addition to three books.

That's not a bad price for a Ripken autograph since he's well north of $100 at shows!

His book signings are great. When he did one down in Florida, you lined up to get your book(s) signed then after getting his autograph, you could line up in a second line. Every so often Cal would get up and walk over to the second line where you could get a picture with him. I don't think I've heard/seen anything else like this before. Also, at the very end of the signing when he was getting ready to leave, about 10 of us had other items and he signed one piece of memorabilia for each person. Not sure if he usually does that but we were lucky! He was very friendly and talked to everybody during the signing. Good Luck!

I wish. When he did a signing for one of his books at Barnes & Noble in Skokie, IL a few years back, it was only one line, he would only sign books only, and he did not get up and take pictures in another line nor sign anything people brought. I have been to a couple of book signings (Dwyane Wade, Phil Jackson, Kristi Yamaguchi, Jeremy Roenick, Andre Dawson, Cal Ripken), and the ones that are at the big chain stores seem to be more restrictive, and the ones at the smaller independent bookstores seem to be a little more open. I haven't been to enough to truly validate that claim, it's just an opinion so far.

Barnes and Noble is the ABSOLUTE WORST for book signings which sucks because they get most of the big names. I've been to some (and heard stories from others) where the signer was happy to sign something else (Graham Nash) but B&N staff would not let them, or where the signer was happy to pose for photos (Robbie Robertson) but B&N told him not to. Most of the time the signers are just doing what they're told... but at smaller independent bookstores they're allowed to do whatever they want.
I went to a Mike Tyson book signing recently at an independent bookstore in NJ and he was signing anything people brought as well as posing for photos with each person. I talked to people who went to his signing at B&N in NYC the night before and there were strict no photo/nothing but the book rules.
I've been to events before at the place where this Ripken event is and they're usually very cool. And since Ripken is historically a great IP signer (when he can be) I'm hoping for the best. I remember during his playing days at spring training he'd stay after practice for hours signing autographs.

I'm definitely interested man. I'm sure my son would love me to read him the book and I'd love to have the graph! Let me know if you're willing to do it for me. Also, I could send a ball just in case he's willing/able to sign that as well.

As long as they'll let me purchase as many copies of the book as I want (that's the policy at most book signings) I am happy to pick up a copy for each of you if you'd like. Please PM me and we'll work out the details.
I'm not going to take any memorabilia (balls, cards, etc) from anyone since I will be bringing an item or two myself and there's no guarantee that he'll sign that stuff anyway.
I'm willing to get one more signed book for someone if anyone wants... so I'm volunteering to do the favor for a total of three people.
