    Yzerman - DNS

Did not show for the Lidstrom Retirement Ceremony. This is the 2nd time he has stepped on his own firehouse in the past month. Lidstrom spent the majority of his speech thanking him.

Should have at least made an effort to be there.

    Poor Form.

He is probably in therapy somewhere...it is one thing for Wayne to be the lead dog for Canada....Everyone defers to him...Izizerman, not so much, I think the suits pushed him around a fair bit...I think the only other ex-player who could pull it off is Mario...

Gretzky could not organize a Two Car Parade, hence his failure with senior citizens in 2006 with his 2nd Olympic go-round. Gretzky also bombed severely as a head coach. Yzerman made the mistake this year of listening to Kevin Slowe, the turnstile from Edmonton, instead of backing his franchise player. Marty St. Louis has an Olympic Gold Medal nonetheless, a new team and Yzerman cannot find enough napkins to wipe the egg from his face.

He has only himself to blame. He should have told those other knobs to get lost. Now he has no St. Louis. Not very diplomatic.

Yep. Yzerman totally blew it. Team Canada was terrible and Martin St. Louis was what they needed to bring home the gold.

Oh wait, what's that? Canada would have won, whether Martin St. Louis was in Sochi or if he were in Hawaii?

Perhaps Steve Yzerman was not at Lidstrom's ceremony because he is GM of another team.

Yeah, I CAN'T believe Yzerman no showed. I mean, the day after the trade deadline, a new player showing up in the organization, no real need to sit down with him. And naming Stamkos the captain, pretty sure he could have had that over the phone on the plane ride to Detroit. Definitely should have done everything he could to get out of his job to attend a pre-game retire ceremony for Lidstrom.

He telephoned Lidstrom. Every other GM was there, even Jim Nill. Poor Form.

    Don't forget Gretzky's failure in 1998!

But you bring up a good point. While Yzerman (Izeermann? Not sure, Ask Clinton) had the final say, as one person has to have that, he wasn't the only one making decisions. St. Louis has (apparently) wanted to go to New York for a long time, to be closer to his home in Connecticut. He also (apparently) preferred the Rags to the Devils or Islanders, as he (again, apparently) had a list of place he would go that was 1 team long: NYR.

The Olympics thing may have been the final straw. If I were St. Louis I would be a little miffed to hear the powers that be of Canadian hockey think Chris Kunitz is better (no offence to Kunitz, but he's not St. Louis), and when a GM who is or was integral to your career slights you, it hurts even more, just ask Bobby Ryan.

He wasn't going to retire as a member of the Lightning, regardless of the Olympics. That much is pretty clear, I think. This just made sure he didn't finish his contract and sign in NY for 1 year as a free agent. Given the situation, I think Yzerman did pretty good for Tampa and he won a Gold medal for Canada, despite not initially picks St. Louis. Personally, He should have picked St. Louis and taken Giroux when Stamkos couldn't go, leaving Kunitz right out of it. But they won Gold, so what the hell do I know.

YERSIREEEEE...that old Gretzky is one big Idiot ...although he could "organize" everyone on the ice like a master chess player and make fools of everyone....Although telling/coaching others to be a genius is Not quite so easy, in fact, it is impossible.

The greatest players often don't make the best coaches. That has been evident in about 10 different Sports through the last 100 years.

Gretzky is one of the poorest coaches I have watched in the NHL. Mean-spirited, ill-tempered, not very sportsmanlike behind the bench.

um yeah....what about that is different from what I just said?? Those who can, play, those who can't, teach....

Is it not enough for #99 to to be the greatest, or one of the greatest athletes of all time, or is no one safe from your bitterness?
Did you win any Cups? any coach of the year awards? are you a great GM of a NHL team? The way you talk, you should be all three!!
