The concept, sure. These findings, no chance. It was neat to hear that chimps in Africa are developing a system of written communication, but only one small group of people have seen it. So even though the theory has been scrutinized, I don't know it actually happened, until there is some sort of confirmation beyond "awarding" a prize for saying something that conforms to what is thought to be true.

I think it's a little unfair to compare chimps in Africa to something much bigger. The Nobel Peace Prize is the hallmark of awards that every team of scientists strive for, so it's a big deal. People don't win that prize unless it's beyond the shadow of a doubt serious and completely plausible. I think you should look at past winners of this award, and figure out how many of these scientist's theories you know actually happened. I think you'd be surprised.

Being the first African-American President in a land that once frowned upon equality is a pretty big deal. I don't think you should try to degrade that, regardless of your feelings about him.

I am degrading nothing. Look at the quote the NPP committee released when the gave it to him...

What had he done to further international diplomacy or cooperation between people at the beginning of his presidency? Nothing. He still hasn't done anything to further international peace. Our relationship with Russia, Israel, Afghanistan and Libya is worse. Our relationship with North Korea and Iran is either the same or worse. Who do we have a better relationship because of his efforts?

If speaking the truth is degrading then Obama has a lot of degrading to look forward to. The Nobel Peace prize is supposed to be for people who accomplish great things that make the world a better place. Obama can't even produce a working ACA website.

The size of the finding has nothing to do with what I am saying. Let's say a scientist debunks the Big Bang tomorrow. Would you be calling for a Nobel, or would you want maybe a second opinion before handing out hardware for the finding.

I can kinda see where this is heading. I could offer a counter-argument, but when we start using sarcastic rhetoric like asking me if your example is sufficient, it's usually a sign of things going south. That is, in all due respect, what I've noticed with your debates on this forum. It's just not something I want to be a part of.

The basis of the award, founded by Nobel in the 1890's, was based on achievement and the abolition of standing armies, with the promotion of peace. I think the President has done so. He got us out of Iraq like he said, sure it took longer, but I'd rather it be late than never. Alfred Nobel also founded the award on the principle of hope, which is why he got the award. It's not an award for just people who accomplish great things, but also for people who open new doors and have the potential to change the world.

You didn't offend me at all. You need to realize that Obama was given the award 9 months after he took office. Even if you give him credit for anything that he has done while president, he was given the award less than a year into his presidency, so there is no way he could have accomplished enough to deserve it. Yes, he got us out of Iraq, but that was after he was given the award, so it wasn't a factor in the award. Anything notable that he accomplished was accomplished after receiving the award which makes it nothing more than a ceremonial PR award.

For comparison, look at those who won it in the same era.

Martti Ahtisaari - 2008 award for 3 decades of conflict mediation and peace efforts on a world-wide scale.
Liu Xiaobo - 2010 award for 20+ years of human rights efforts in China
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkol Karman - 2011 award for efforts in women's rights and peace efforts in Liberia and Yemen.

Obama got his for saying he wanted to reduce nuclear weapons world-wide (which he has not done) and for starting the Iraqi troops draw-down (while increase troop presence in Afghanistan).
