He bought himself an extra year last year with the Vigneault firing. That was my position from the start of the season.
I didn't think the team would be this bad, but it has become a calamity and he is responsible for virtually all of it. He dealt away two #1 NHL goalies in the span of a year. He created a circus around all of it; at a minimum, he did nothing to quell it. The Kesler situation. Giving the Sedins new deals that make them untradeable depreciating assets. On and on.
We'll see what happens next but it can't be much worse than what we've seen the past 12 months. Can it?
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Wow, talk about customer service. Wasn't it just last night the fan's chanted "Fire Gilles"
...all the focus with the 2 goalies, meanwhile they have slid from#1 in offence 4 years ago to 28th this year, I don't follow them enough to know what caused that???Bucket: Hidden Content
Interested in anything hockey, any team, mostly less common rookie cards and anything with a Team Canada jersey.

Injuries, aging veterans, opposing teams start to pick up on the Sedins' moves now that they're just that tiny little bit of slower, a power-play that refuses to innovate, a coach who decides that blocking shots is the most important thing you can do out on the ice which leads to more injuries, amazing lack of depth on the farm after trading away pick after pick at the deadline for rental players.
Oh, my stomach. It hurts SO much.

YYYEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Though, this won't solve anything as long as the fans and ownership are dead set against trading core players. The Sedins are going to retire Canucks and that's fine, and I'd probably hold onto Kesler as well. But guys like Burrows, Bieksa, Edler, they can go. Gillis's problem was being handcuffed into holding onto fan favourites who weren't getting the job done anymore. He did okay in some trades and signings; Garrison was a good pickup so was Higgins, and Santorelli/Richardson were steals, while others fell flat, like Kassian and Booth.
At the end of the day though, it doesn't matter the reasons. Fans, owners, players. These are the three demons you must slay to become a successful GM. Gillis couldn't do it.

The happiest guy in all this: Gilles lol....I pity the fool who gets the GM job, stuck between a meddling owner who thinks he knows about hockey, and....head case Tortorella.

I don't know about that. Someone please find a screenshot of Gillis during the Anaheim game. Dude looked like he got ready in a soup kitchen.
